New minimum wages
effective January 1
Labour Minister Fern Guin-
don announced in the Legislat-
ure this week that a minimum
wage of $2.00 an hour for
employees in general industry
will become effective through-
out Ontario on January 1, 1974.
Present rate of $1.80 became
effective February 1, 1973.
The minimum rate will
apply to all employees except
students under the age of 18.
The student rate w,j11 be $1.65
per hour.
The minimum rate for const-
ruction employees will increase
from $2.05 to $2.25. Guards
on construction sites will rec-
eive the same rate.
Mr. Guindon said the purp-
ose of the minimum wage was
to give workers whose bargain-
ing power is limited a measure
of protection against exploitat-
ion. He said the minimum wag
would be continually under
review and if circumstances so
warranted, he would have no
hesitation in recommending
further increases in the min-
imum wage.
Mr. Guindon also proposed
amendments to the Employ-
ment Standards Act on statutory
holidays, annual vacations and
premium pay for overtime.
The amendments will require
that all employees will receive
four statutory holidays with pay,
Good Friday, Dominion Day,
Labour Day and Christmas Day -
in 1974. This provision will be
extended to include New Year's
Day, Thanksgiving Day and
Victoria Day as holidays with
pay on January 1, 1975.
Effective January 1, 1974,
all employees will be entitled
to two weeks annual vacation
pay with pay after one year of
employment. At the present
time, an employee receives
one week vacation after the
first year and two weeks vacat-
ion after two years employment
Beginning January 1, 1975,
a premium rate of 1 -1/2 times
regular rate will be required
for all hours worked in excess
of 44 hours per week. Previousl:
overtime rates were required
after 48 hours per week.
