AIR CANADA - THE NON AIRLINE
If Air Canada makes a profit
this year, I'd like to think that
it would be due to all the flying
that I have been doing. This
has certainly been a record
year for me and I've still got
four months to do more. To be
honest with you, much as I love
airplanes, I'm a bit tired of
being herded about like cattle,
aryl I hate it when I have a
stewardess who doesn't know
what a smile is let alone a
genuine one. If they do, they
are certainly keeping it a dark
secret.
Let's face it. Flying is a fast
way to go from Southwestern
Ontario to Europe, Vancouver
Miami or other distant parts
but it can be a tiring experience
There are waits at the airports,
security checks, delayed take-
offs, rather vamped quarters
in the aircraft with very little
space to get up and walk. Big-
ger planes mean more passeng-
ers to get in and off and, if
you don't know what I mean,
watch the number of people get
off one of the big jumbo jets
and then line up to claim their

baggage,
My biggest gripe this year
in my flying is Air Canada. I
flew to Ottawa recently. To
begin with the flight was 1 1/4
hours late. While we were wait -
in g all that time, there was
nothing to drink. They started
serving during the flight but by
the time we had a chance to be
served the plane was in the
approach pattern at Ottawa. By
then I was past caring. I would
like to know why they couldn't
do something for us while we
had our long wait on the ground
waiting for the pilots to arrive.
The flight I vote worst of the
year was again Air Canada to
Miami. It was late, service was
at a minimum and two of the
stewardesses seemed far more
interested with catching up on
their gossip than they did with
looking after the passengers. I
felt like hijacking the plane
to Cuba just to get a little att-
ention.
When I think back, the nicest
trips I ever made were by boat.
ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS
The service was always excell-
ent, the pace leisurely and the
boats, even when filled, had
an uncrowded feel about them,
You got to your destination rel-
axed and ready to take on the
world. I regret that our pace of
living has quickened to the
extent that nobody wants to go
by boat any more. At any rate
there are very few of them on
the Atlantic these days.
I must admit that every once
in a while you hit the jackpot
when you fly. The plane leaves
on time, the cabin attendants
are truly friendly, the meal can
be enjoyed at leisure. You arr-
ive at your destination on time
and you luggage ends up with
you, not in Siberia. For the
life of me, I can't remember
when the last time was I had
all those thing happen in one
flight. All I know vas that it
was definetly some time ago.
Travelling can be fun by
plane but not nearly as often as
it used to be.
