A few apple varieties like the
McIntosh were originally discov-
ered by accident. Most of the
newer varieties such as Quinte
and Lodi are the result of years
of research by plant breeders
and geneticists. Research on
the Quinte, for example, began
(at the Central Experimental
Farm, Ottawa) in the mid 40's.
Plant breeders were looking for
an apple with some of the char-
acteristics of the popular Melba
but one that could be harvested
earlier in August. The Melba
was cross -bred with the Crimson
Beauty; the first tree bearing
fruit ten years later. In 1954
growers started planting this new
variety;
BALMACAULAY.
