Fine program for Bean festival
There will be plenty of activ-
ity for every member of the
family at this year's Bean Festiv-
al in Zurich. The main feature,
naturally, is the serving of del-
icious home -baked beans with
all the trimmings, for only one
dollar. Meats will be served
from eleven o' clock in the
morning on until dark.
At two o'clock in the after-
noon there will be a free play,
"Che, " presented by the Lambton
Theatre group, which will be
of a one-hour duration. This
play will be presented outdoors
in the Zurich Community Park,
east of the arena.
A horseshoe tournament will
also take place.at the Zurich
Park, with $100 being awarded
in prize money. There will be
special novelty classes as well
as regular championship rounds.
For race fans, there will be
harness pony races at the old
fair grounds, at the east end of
the village. These races are also
scheduled to get under way at
two o'clock.
All through the afternoon buses
will be leaving for Green Acres
from a location on the main
street, At the farm visitors will
be taken on a wagon tour of the
premises.
As well as all other activities,
there will be continuous entert-
ainment provided from a stage
at the north end of the mall.
Featured will be groups known
as "Katie and I, " the Labatt's
"German Band, " and the "Zurich
Centennial Band."
Funds for swimming ool
The proceeds from this year's
annual Bean Festival in Zurich
have been earmarked for one
particular purpose an eventual
swimming pool for the commun-
ity. Early this year the execut-
ive committee of the Bean Fest-
ival decided that all proceeds in
the future years would be used
for this one particular project -
until it is completed.
While no action has been tak-
en to date regarding a swimming
pool for the community, the
executive committee felt if they
would earmark the proceeds from
the festival for this purpose, it
might start something moving in
this regard.
Over the past years, proceeds
from the festival have been
donated to various organizations
for community betterment. Don-
ations have been made to the
Zurich Arena; the Zurich Recreat-
ion League for installation of
floodlights at the ball park; the
Zurich Centennial Band and the
Zurich lvlinor"Athletic Association
However, the overall profits
from the festival during the past
few years have not been that
large, since a great deal of
money has been invested in equip-
ment which is used from year to
year. The corporation presently
owns two large bean cookers, a
number of ovens for baking beans,
a large quantity of steel pans,
steps, a large refrigeration unit
which has just been completed
for this year, as well as other
numerous items.
The total assets of the Bean
Festival Corporation are estim-
ated to be close to $5, 000.
