RCMP show in London
The RCMP Centennial Rev-
iew, a pageant reflecting the
Force's past 100 years, will
begin a three-day run at the
London Gardens on Friday, Sept-
ember 21.
The Review, to be presented
by the Western Fair Association,
features 175 Force members in
a stirring two-hour program
that recaptures early RCMP
history in thrilling action set to
the music of the RCMP band. It
opens with a colorful re-enact-
ment of the NWMP's Great
March West in 1874 and closes
after the dashing cavalry charge
of the RCMP's famous Musical
Ride.
A performance by an eight -
horse precision jumping team,
a mounted arms competition
and a demonstration by four
trained service dogs, including
a mock purse -snatching incident,
are other Review attractions.
The 40 -voice RCMP choir enter-
tains with old Western ballads,
contemporary Canadian songs
and lyrics written especially for
the RCMP presentation.
Frontier action and pioneer -
style entertainment will fill the
London Gardens during the Rev-
iew's re-enactment of the Great
March West. Audiences will see
mounties wearing replicas of
NWMP uniforms complete with
pill box hats, and a model of
the actual nine -pounder gun
hauled across the prairies by the
small pioneer Force. An even-
ing campfire scene provides the
setting for songs and music.
The rigorous training and
discipline of the contemporary
RCMP are reflected in many acts
included in the second half of
the Review. Recruit units from
the Force's training depot. in
Regina have the spotlight in dis-
plays of precision foot drill,
gymnastics and self-defense.
To re-enact traditional cavalry
skill at mounted arms, four
horsemen in period uniform race
against time and each other over
an obstacle course, competing
for points with sabre, gun and
lance. The performance by the
eight -horse equestrian team
features an intricate pattern of
jumps over hurdles and hedges
in split-second timing, includ-

The climax of the RCMP
Review is the world-famous
Musical Ride with its precision
manoeuvres and charge which
have thrilled hundreds of thous-
ands of people in Canada and ab•
road. For the Review's finale,
the entire cast led by the RCMP
choir salutes each of Canada's
provinces in a medley of songs
by Canadian composers.
Elaborate lighting and scenery
create special background eff-
ects for the Review, which
provides area residents with a
once-in-a-lifetime opportun-
ity to see the spectacle. The
troupe will disband when its
tour is over at the end of Sept-
ember and there probably won't
be another like it for the next
hundred years.
