50 Years Ago
The first light frost of the
season took place on Monday
through the evening, and did
it's share of damage to some of
the late crops.
The flax pulling gang of F. C.
Kalbfleisch have completed
their work for the season, ending
up with a large field near Kip -
pen on Friday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Hess,
who have spent the past five
years in Biggar, Sask., have
returned east and Mr. Hess has
purchased the stock and jewel-
lery store in Hensall, which he
plans to operate.
Mr. Louis Kalbfleisch, of the
16th concession, Hay, had a
narrow escape last week while
threshing. In some manner
he fell through a hole and was
almost completely covered with
straw. After a group of workmen
removed the straw Mr. Kalbfl-
eisch was able to be rescued.
Mr, and Mrs. T.W. Parimer
and son Roy have left Hensall
for Brantford, where they will
make their home in the future.
Cook Bors, in Hensall have
been appointed as uptown agents
for the Canadian National Rail-
ways.
Mr. R. T. Dunlop, of Frank-
fort, a former manager of the
Molson's Bank in Zurich, was a
recent visitor with friends in the
village

Seventeen carloads of grain
were shipped out of Hensall in
the past week, by the various
grain companies serving the area
Mr. William Jennison, who
operates two threshing machines
on the Bluewater highway, has
a big problem on his hands at
the present time, with all the
farmers hollering at once to

have their grain threshed.
About one dozen bands will
take part in the annual Hensall
Band Tattoo, scheduled for next
Wednesday evening.
During the hot weather during.
the past week or two many of
the people have found tempor-
ary relief along the lake, and
all the resorts report overcrowd-
ing.
The wedding of Viola Mary
Stelck to William Arthur Gold-
ing, son of W.H. Golding, M.P.
took place at Windsor on Satur-
day.
Local beekeepers report one
of the best yields of honey this
year that they have had in many
a year.

R. Gordon Bennett, Huron
County's new agricultural rep-
resentative, has arrived in
Clinton and has assumed his
duties in this area.
Congratulations go to Miss
Nola Krueger, who at present
is on the teaching staff at the
Sarnia Public School. While
attending summer school at the
University of Western Ontario
in London, Miss Krueger was
elected vice-president.
Mr. Howard -Hyde, prominent
young Hensall businessman,
passed away suddenly at his homt
on Saturday morning, at the age
of 35.
A native of Zurich, Mrs.
George Baldwin, passed away
suddenly in St. Thomas on Sat-
urday , in her seventy-fifth
year. She was the former Edith
Steinbach, a daughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Stein-
bach.
Ivan and Albert Kalbfleisch,
of Zurich, motored to Ottawa
over the weekend, where they
attended the large annual con-
vention of the Liberal Party.

Mr. Dominic Jeffrey, of St.
Joseph, has a large gang of men
busy building a large new cot-
tage at the lake for a concern
from Detroit. When completed
the cottage will accommodate
about three or four families.

Machinery is now in motion
for the forthcoming vote in Hay
Township and the Village of
Zurich on the question of issu-
ing debentures in the amount
of $80, 000 for a three-room
addition and a gymnasium to
the area school located in Zur-
ich.
Ratepayers in the Village of
Hensall will pay an increase of
two mills on their residential
properties and 3.6 mills for
their commercial properties this

At their regular monthly
meeting last week, the council
of the Township of Hay authoriz-
ed a loan of $765 to the Com-
munity board, to pay for paint-
ing the Arena and Community
Centre. One-third of this am-
ount will be paid for by the
Village of Zurich, who pay one-
third of all operating expendit-
ures on the Arena and Centre.
Miss Marlene Keller, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Keller, was
successful in passing her govern-
ment examinations for hair-
dressing at Paul Pogue's Beauty
School, London.
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Mousseau
and Mrs. Luella Willert have
returned home from a delight-
ful four week's motor trip to
Saskatchewan.

Mrs. Harold Penhale spent
near two weeks at St. Thomas
with her sister Mrs. Walter Scott.
During the illness and after the
death of her sisters husband, the
late Walter Scott. He had been
an employee of Westminister
Hospital in London for over 20
years and he will be greatly
missed by a large number of
friends in that vicinity.
Mr. and Mrs. William Dun -
calf of Breslau spent four days
last week with Mr. and Mrs.
Harold Penhale and called on
other members of the Penhale
family.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Bennett
and daughters Marlene and Joan
of Goderich visited with Mr.
and Mrs. H. Penhale on Sunday.
