Forage legumes can be made into a 257o crude protein concentrate which can supply all the protein requirements of high -producing dairy and beef animals. How- ever, to obtain high protein from second -cut hay, harvest it early, says R. S, Fulkerson, crop scientist, Ontario Agricult- ural College, University of Guelph, Legumes should be cut at the early -bud stage of development, a week or so before the normal second -cut harvest. In studies sponsored by the Ontario Min- istry of Agriculture and Food, alfalfa cut when its buds were about the size of a pea averag- ed 23)/0 crude protein (as a per- centage of dry matter), and produced a ton of protein per acre over the growing season. Delaying the harvest beyond the early -bud stage increases the forage yield, but dilutes the amount of protein in the feed. Farmers looking for a substitute for protein meal should, therefore, harvest their legumemeadows early. Also, if thehay is to be stored in dry form, favorable weather for field curing is more likely earlier in the summer. Bird's -foot trefoil, Ladino clover, and red clover, as well as alfalfa, can be used for concentrated protein feeds. All must be cut at the early bud stage when studies have shown protein content to average respectively 23/o, 2750, 21/0 and 23)70 (as a percentage of dry matter). Because the leaves of these crops Contain about 70 o of all the protein in the crop, they should be carefully preserv- ed when the crop is stored as dry hay or silage. Potter today urged Ontario parents to be sure their children are adequately immunized be- fore they go to school in the fall, A Ministry study, in 37 of Ontario's 43 health units, rev- ealed that one in every five children entering school in September 1972 had less than adequate immunization against preventable diseases. Of the ]28, 884 children in the study, 99, 881 were kindergarten child- ren, representing 79 per cent of all children at that school level in the province. About 75 per cent of those studies had been immunized against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus and polio. Smallpox vaccine had been given to 65.5 per cent of the children. Only 58 per cent --in some areas, less than 30 per cent --of the pre-schoolers had been vac- cinated against measles. Less than 20 per cent of the children studies had received rubella (German measles) vaccine. "With this rate of immunization outbreaks of measles are inevit-, able, " Dr. Potter said. Diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio immunization-- which can be given in a single inocul- ation- -should be completed by the time a child is six months old. A reinforcing dose should follow a year later. "Every child should have pro- tection against these preventable. diseases as early in life as poss- ible, " said Dr. Potter. "It ap- pears from the data we've col- lected that mahy parents view the school as the primary source of immunization. This is a cause for concern because too many of our children pass through their pre-school years vulner- able to some or all of these pre- ventable diseases." Parents can have their child- ren immunized by their family doctor or at their local health unit.
