rout my ivtitdow
What happened to the lazy
summer days? What happened
to those quiet peaceful hours
when life seemed warm and
wonderful and living was just
pure pleasure?
This has been the absolutely
busiest summer of my entire
lifetime. Here it is the first of
August and I've had time to sit
in the sun only once... and then
for just about one-half hour.
Whew! What, a gruelling race.
Summer is, of course, the
most hectic season of the year
for my lumberman husband.
These days he's on the go from
sun -up to sun -down... and later.
He's up and gone before the
rest of the house is awake,
he's home at noon only long
enough to grab a sandwich and
a cup of tea' he's home at din-
ner time for only sufficient time
to eat and to hear the day's
family problems; and he's gone
until long after the most of the
household has settled down for
the night. So that's one spouse
out of the way!
For our eldest son, the work -
a -day world has claimed him.
He has a six-day a week posit-
ion this summer which keeps
him occupied during the .daytime
hours. And in the evenings,
when you're young and eager
like most young men his age,
you're out and going at anything
that seems exciting for the
Perfect score
John Anderson of Kippen had
a perfect score at the trap shoot
last Wednesday at the Vanastra
Gun Club when he hit 25 out
of a possible 25 targets.
Lloyd Venner, of Hensall shot
23 targets, while Mervin Bat -
kin of Clinton scored 22. Other
scores are; Burt Mahaffy, 20;
Tom Allan and till McNutt,
16 each,
Last Saturday, Torn Jardin
of Wingham hit 24 out of 25
targets in the skeet shoot,
while Mervic Batkin of Clinton,
Dr. Andy Rynne of Mitchell
and Don Bricker of Goderich
each had 23.
Other scores included Louis
Morello and Harold Hardin,
22, John Land, Glenn Mogk,
Burt Mahaffy and Hermie Fish-
er, 21 each; Jim Hogg 18 and
Ashley Gilbert, 15.

moment. So that's one offspring
out of my hair!
Our daughter is helping me
out this summer. She's looking
after the house and her little
brother...in the daytime.
And in the evenings she's really
active with ballgames, and
regular babysitting commit-
ments and rollerskating and
whatever else young fry her age
do on those languid summer
nights... until curfew time. So
that's another offspring I don't
have to entertain.
Our youngest son has a crazy
schedule, too. He's involved
in our town's marvellous play-
ground program this summer;
he's taking swimming lessons;
he's always got a game of ball
or hide-and-seek going some-
where in the neighborhood; he's
got his regular television prog-
rams to catch; and he's got the
usual skullduggery of a seven-
year old to do. So that's the
third and final offspring engaged
fulltime.
Which leaves only me... and
what a wonderful, wonderful
summer I'm having.
I'm working a full shift at the
office, of course, but a good
many evenings I'm completely
on my own for several hours to
indulge myself in any of my
most secret whims... at least
that's how it should be.
But that's hardly the case. The
community around me and many
of my good friends has been
keeping me absolutely in a tizzy
from Monday through Sunday.
Two nights a week, for
instance, I have a theatre
engagement. On Tuesday even-
ings, I drop in on a local youth
theatrical group in my town to
see what goodies they've got
lined up for the public. On Wed
nesday evenings, it's off to the
country for another evening of
theatre.. summer stock in a
tent which I'm finding most
enjoyable.
One night a week I reserve
for shopping... grocery shopp-
ing, mostly, the bane of my
life.
I work one night a week
(sometimes two) and when I
can, I like to attend my daugh-
ter's baseball game providing it
doesn't clash with my regular
theatre calls.
And'then there's been wedd-

ings. ,to fill my weekends...
and showers,. to fill my empty
evenings. There's been barbecue
outings and boating invitations
and community affairs and bus-
iness -social events. , . well,
you must get the picture. When
I've got nothing else to do, I
visit my wonderful relatives and
friends near and far.
I'll tell you, when you've got
five people as busy as the five
of us, it takes one tremendous
co-ordinator to keep things mov-
ing
owing smoothly so that each one
can pursue his or her own infer-
ests. Is it any wonder, them,

has just flown by so far, ..and
there's no let up in sight,
You bet. We're out of our
minds. , .but then, so is every-
body else you care to mention
these days.
