Farm agency
w#aches prices
(by Keith Roulston)
The Ontario Farm Machinery
Agency will continue to act as
a watchdog to make sure farm
machinery prices don't skyrocket
Jim Jacklin, president of the
organization stated Thursday
night to directors of the Huron
County Federation of Agriculture
Mr. Jacklin, an Elmwood -
area farmer who is also a memb-
er of the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture executive, reviewed
the past work of the agency at
the meeting. He noted the ag-
ency has had three different
roles during its lifetime.
The first role was to reduce
prices by directly importing
farm machinery into the country
from abroad. He said he would
not say that the agency had
caused lower proces, but he
would point to the fact that until
this year there had been no
increase in price on the domest-
ic market. "Overseas prices
went up, " he said, "and our
price went up but we did help
prohibit an increase for four and
a half years."
In its second role, he said,
the agency changed to become
a lever to help a farmer in
getting a better price from his
dealer. The agency would prov-
ide a quote at which the farmer
could get a similar piece of
machinery if the dealer did not
come up with a good price.
Under its third role, the
agency has become a watchdog.
It is still importing some mach-
inery including lines not avail-
able on the domestic market
such as a four-wheel drive Ford
tractor and cage wheels for add-
ed floatation and power for
tractors and combines. But on
the whole the group is there as
a threat to manufacturers that
it may go back into importing
if prices rise.
"I'm concerned as president, "
he said, "that we don't become
another United Co-operatives of
Ontario, another farmer- owned
organization."
Mr. Jacklin said he felt effort
should be put into helping UCO
to be a better organization
rather than trying to construct a
similar organization.
Mr. Jacklin, who is also a
member of the Canadian Feed
Grain Board, discussed the cur-
rent protein situation
SUMMER PLAYGROUND IN OPERATION - Under ideal weather conditions, the playground being operated for area youngsters in
Zurich is in full swing. Last Friday a group of the children enjoyed a hike and weiner roast at Cedar -Brook Park, south-west of the
Village. They are shown here taking part in a game of touch ball, under the careful supervision of the group of youths in charge of
the program. Beginning next week the program will operate in both the morning and afternoon.
The first week at the Play-
ground was a terrific success.
There are 65 children register-
ed for Playground and 57 regist-
ered for swimming classes.
Some classes are running smooth
ly while others had difficulty
due to driving arrangements.
May we remind parents that the)
are responsible for their child-
ren's transportation to the lake
for lessons. Most groups have
formed car pools and this has in
the past worked most success-
fully.
Parents who do not or can't
drive usually pay another par-
ent to take their turn,
Next Monday morning July
16, the children are conducting
a bottle drive in the town to
help finance special activities.
Your co-operation is asked in
having your bottles ready when
you are called on.
Friday afternoon playground
members hiked from the Bronson
to Cedarbrooks Camp. Outdoor
activities and games were enj-
oyed by 75 and 216 hotdogs were
