PATRICIA BENDER AND SUSAN GRIGG SUPPLY MUSIC If you have planted a new hedge this year and the bottom is very open and bare, don't hesitate to cut back the tops to make the plants bushy at the bottom. If this is not done in the early growth stages, the hedge will not by bushy as it develops. Make sure that your pruning shears are sharp so that the cuts are clean. Using a line of string stretched along your hedge at the proper height will help ensure that the hedge is straight and even.
