Hay elevators
cause accidents
Portable hay elevators and "
silo unloaders are two pieces of
equipment that save time and
labor on Ontario farms. These
commonly -used farm machines
make extensive use of steel
cables in their design. "How-

Obituary
FREDERICK W. STEMON
A resident of Zurich for a
number of years, Frederick Wil-
liam Siemon passed away at
South Huron Hospital, on Sat-
urday, July 7, in his 87th year.
Born in Hay Township on Jan-
uary 29, 1887, he was a son of
the late Mr. and Mrs. George
Siemon.
For a number of years Mr.
and Mrs. Siemon lived on the
Bluewater Highway, in Hay
Township, before retiring to the
village.
Surviving is his wife, the
former Agnes Charrette; two
sons, Harold, Goderich, Joseph,
Windsor, two daughters, Mrs.
Roy (Marie) Rau, Seaforth, Mrs.
Dominic (Thelma) Jeffrey,
R.R.2, Zurich, and one sister,
Mrs. Robert (Laura) Dunbar, of
Lambeth. There are also 23
grandchildren and 13 great grand.
children.
The body rested at the West-
lake funeral home, Zurich,
until Tuesday morning, when
funeral mass was held at St.
Boniface Church, Zurich, with
intermentin the adjoining cern-
etery. Father A. Durand officiat.

Patrick Jeffrey, Joe Rau and John
Rau.
ing the harvesting season, "
states Don Brown, public relat-
ions coordinator with the Farm
Safety Association. "Check the
cables before the equipment
is put into use, " he emphasizes.
If your bale elevator has been
in storage for quite a while, or
if the cables have been exposed
to weathering or extensive use,
the metal may have deterioratec
to the point where it is danger-
ous to operate. As easily as a
pair of scissors cuts through
paper, a snapping cable can
sever limbs.
Hoist cables should also be
carefully checked for fraying
and worn areas. Replace the
cables if necessary. Under the
stress of a workload, worn cable!
may break. The elevator or silo
unloader could collapse, poss-
ibly trapping someone under-
neath.
