Centennial at Exeter
An 80 -float parade attracted
an estimated 12, 000 spectators
to the streets of Exeter Saturday
for the opening of the town's
centennial. Floats, antique cars,
bands and majorettes from
Sarnia, Stratford and Toronto
joined local entries to make the
parade a colorful two-hour event
The streets were filled with
the sounds of marching music
as Sarnia's Lions Band, the
London and Woodstock Midland-
ers. Drum and Bugle Band and
the Exeter Legion Pipe Band
played for the parade.
The floats depicted Exeter's
early days; Blacksmiths with
forge and anvil; women at quilt-
ing bees and churning butter,
and horse-drawn carriages carry-
ing residents in centennial
costumes.
One area couple, Mr. and
Mrs. David Mack, celebrated
their golden wedding anniversary
by riding in a Model T Ford in
the parade.
The Exeter Dutch Commun-
ity honoured the Canadian Leg-
ion with its float of Dutch danc-
ers, windmills and flowers drawn
by an army jeep filled with
Exeter Canadian Legion, Branch
16'7, members. The Dutch mes-
sage, printed on the side of the
float, thanked Canadians for
liberating the Netherlands in the
Second World War.
Although rain started to fall
just as the parade began, a
large crowd lined the streets
to see the town's history played
out before them.
The sun broke through the
clouds just as the parade finish-
ed and continued to shine on the
official ceremonies at Exeter
Community Park where the
centennial was officially open-
ed by Senator Richard. Sunbury
(L - Ontario) a former resident
of Exeter, Senator Stanbury
read a letter of greetings sent
by Mayor O.C. Toser of Exeter,
England, and pronounced the
eight-day centennial officially
open.
Senator Stanbury's younger
brother, Robert Stanbury, feder-
al minister of national revenue,
also participated in the opening,
presenting honorary plaques to
the first four mayors of Exeter;
B.C. Tuckey, W.G. Cochrane,
R.E. Pooley and Elrod Simmons.
A skydiving demonstration
by the Hamilton Sport Parachute
Club continued the day's events
until the chicken barbecue was
ready.
B yfield council
(by Milvena Erickson)
Regular Council meeting for
the Village of Bayfield was
held on Monday evening, July
2, when councillors learned of
a shortage of manpower for en-
umerators for the assessment
to begin September 4. Anyone
interested is asked to call the
village clerk or the regional
assessment office, Napier St.,
Goderich. The Assessment Of-
fice is also preparing a list of
canine owners for the municip-
alitie's reference.
A letter from Bert Mundt,
was received with a request that
his property be re -zoned from
developmental to residential,
as he would like to build a
cottage.
A letter was written to Don
Jeffs accepting his offer of a
needs manpower
vapour unit for testing purposes,
to see if these street lights
prove as satisfactory as advert-
ised. These units would cut
costs, if satisfactory.
Interim approval was granted
to Carson -Elliott Marina, lots
201, 202, and 203, plan 5, Mill
property, to operate a Marina
until formal rezoning is approv-
ed. This request is to be made
to the council on a yearly basis.
In other business the ditches
are to be levelled on William
Street; complete the work on
the south end of Tuyll Street,
filling the pot holes, and it was

the counties and regions of
Ontario, the Ontario Association
of Homes for the aged, Murray
Gaunt and Jack Riddell, calling
for petitioning of the Minister
of Community .and Social Service
Rene Brunelle to allow any exc-
ess income of estended care
resident to be applied against
any arrears of maintenance.
In connection with this request
the Board of Management noted
that at the present time, a
number of extended care resid-
ents receive monthly income in
excess of their comfort allow-
ance of $35 and the cost of
maintenance of $4. per day.
Some of these residents, the
Board explained, owe a consid-
erable amount for arrears of
maintenance which was built
up prior to becoming eligible
for extended care benefits.
The committee felt this
excess revenue should be used
to reduce the amount of monies
owing and therefore recommend-
ed the resolution which Council
supported.
Council also approved the
letting of tenders for the supply
of milk, butter and ice cream
to Huronview for one year com-
