Mt.Carmel couple
married 50 years
Mr. and Mrs. Patrick J.
Sullivan, Mt. Carmel will
celebrate their 50th wedding
anniversary June 10 with a fam-
ily dinner at the Dashwood
Community Centre.
Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan were
married June 6, 1923 in St.
Helen's Church, Wallacetown,
by Mr. Sullivan's brother, Fath-
er Basil Sullivan. They farmed
in Stephen township, lot 9,
concession 13, until 15 years
ago, and then retired to Mt.
Carmel.
Mrs. Sullivan is the former
Catherine Kairns, daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. John
Kairns, Wallacetown. Mr.
Sullivan is the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Sullivan,
Stephen Township.
The couple has one son and
four daughters Patrick A.,
Stephen Township; Mrs. Joseph
(Beatrice) Casey, Wallacetown;
Mrs. Jack (Theresa) Pearson,
London; Mrs. Jerome (Catherine',
Regier, Walkerton; and Mrs.
Stanley (Helen) Loos, Sarnia.
They have 22 grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Annie (Kairns) Keough
and John Kairns were the att-
endants 50 years ago.

On Sunday at 2;15 a.m. cars
driven by Ralph Geiger, Zurich,
and Leslie Sampson, Brucefield,
collided on Highway 4 north of
Hensall. Both drivers were
injured as was Dorothy Flipo-
wich, Exeter, a passenger in
Sampson's car. Total damage
was estimated at $800 by Const-
able Bill Lewis.
On Tuesday at 1 p.m. a car
driven by Lenwood Purdy, Hen-
sall, and a truck driven by
Patrick Cook, Clinton, collided
on Highway 4, north of Hensall.
Total damage was estimated at
$300 by Constable Ed Wilcox.
On Thursday at 7,30 p. m.
car driven by Godelieve Aerssen,
R. R. 3, Dashwood, and a bicycle
ridden by Karen McCann, Mt.
Carmel, collided on the Dash-
wood Road at Mt. Carmel.
The little girl, age 7, was taken
to St. Joseph's Hospital, London
by Hoffman's Ambulance where
she was admitted for head inj-
uries. Damage was estimated at
$70 by Constable Al Quinn.
On Friday at 12.30 a.m. a car
driven by Allan Sawyer, Exeter,
Skidded out of control on Side -
road 20-21 west of Exeter and
collided witha hydro support
cable. Total damage was estim-
ated at $475. by Constable Don
Mason.
A break and enter at Monteiths
Farm Sales, Exeter, in which a
small amount of change was
taken, is being investigated by
Constable Bill Lewis.

For screening an area, prov-
iding shade on a porch or cover-
ing a fence, climbing vines
could be the answer. These
annual or perennial plants come
in many different varieties,
colors and growing habits, says
R.F. Gomme, horticultural spec
ialist, Ontario Ministry of Agr-
iculture and Food.
Some of the most popular
annual vines are morning glory,
sweet peas and scarlet runner
beans. These easy -to -grow
vines can be purchased as young
seedlings or grown from seed.

Silver lace vine, climbing
honeysuckle, clematis, trumpet
vine, Virginia creeper, and
Boston ivy are some of the more
commonly used perennial var-
ieties. Sometimes perennial
vines can be slow starters, but
within one or two seasons, they
can grow to screen a patio or
spread over a fence.
Whatever type of climbing
vine you choose, it is import-
ant to -plant them in a well -
drained and fertile soil. Adding
peatmoss and leaf mold to the
topsoil helps to ensure healthy
