INTERESTING HAPPENINGS IN ONTARIO'S PREMEST VILLAGE
(continued from page 18)
gave each of the Novice players;
who had won a trophy; a coloured
picture.
The Lions were pleased to
report that they had donated
$550. towards games and pract-
ice nights.
Mr. Pat Graham, who showed
a ]teen interest in these young
players, was chairman for the
get-to-gether.
EASTER SEAL CAMPAIGN
Easter Seal Campaign Chair-
man, Mr. Gordon Graham,
reported that the Lions are very
pleased with the response rec-
eived so far this year.
The objective was $450 and tc
date $463. has been received;
and the campaign will continue
until the end of June, so they
expect to be well over their tar-
get.
Mr. Graham said that these
donations are used'solely for
Crippled Children, and each
year half of the monies receiv-
ed is held in case of need of
anyone in the village. however,
if none of these funds are req-
uired, they are forwarded to
Headquarters the following year.
Bring the Bluebirds back to
Bayfield was the purpose of a
meeting heldon Saturday, May
12 in the Municipal Building.
There were 16 present with Mr.
Harvey MacDougall acting as
chairman.
After a brief talk by Mr.
MacDougall, in which he expl-
ained the objectives of the proj-
ect it was decided to form a
Society.
An executive was elected
with Mr. MacDougall as presi-
dent; Mr. Philip Duboulay as
Vice-president; Dr. Morgan
Smith as treasurer and Mrs.
Betty Burch as Secretary. This
executive was asked to appoint
a group of 10 directors who woub
submit an application for a
grant to the New Horizons Prog-
ram.
Suggestions for a name for
the new society were made and
after some discussion the name
"Bayfield Area Bluebird Society"
was selected. Mr. MacDougall
and Mr. DuBoulay have been
putting up bluebird boxes for
the last two years and were
happy to announce that five of
these boxes already have blue-
birds nesting in them. It is the
hope of the Society that many
more boxes will be installed and
the Bayfield area will become
the centre of bluebird trails
where everyone is welcome to
become interested in these lov-
ely birds.
UNITED CHURCH WOMEN
The May meeting of Unit I
of the United Church Women
was held at the home of Mrs.
Margaret Mayman on Thursday,
May 3, with 16 members present
Mrs. Duggan led the devotions,
assisted by Mrs. Doris Reddoch
and Mrs. Vivian Morton. Mrs.
Duggan gave a most interesting
and informative talk about
education in India. Her topic
dealt with student opinion from
two Christian Colleges; one at
Madras, the other at Delhi. it
was interesting to note that
these students were troubled by
the same unrest as students here
in Canada --namely subject
matter offered in their courses
and lack of real direction in
their lives.
The hostesses for the meeting
were Mrs. Mayman, Mrs. Nina
flaw, Mrs. Elva Cox and Mrs.
Lulu Smith. '
For many years the flower bed
in Clan Gregor Square were
maintained by Mrs. May Hop-
son and Mr. Alfred Westlake.
After Mr. Westlake's death, his
son and daughter-in-law, Mr.
and Mrs. Gladwin Westlake and
grand -daughter Mrs. Joe Chap-
man carried on his part. Now
Mrs. Hopson is no longer a res-
ident of the village.
A group of people gathered
at Mrs. Chapman's last week to
plan to beautify Clan Gregor
Square with flowers. They dug
up the old flower beds on Mon-
day and will replant them the
last week in May. The group
is hoping to find enough famil-
ies interested in helping so that
each family will be responsible
for the maintenance of the flow-
ers for one week during the sum-
mer. The Village Council will
purchase the annuals for planting
So far nine individuals or fam•
ilies will help, so several more
are needed. A calendar will be
posted at the Town Crier bullet-
in board where you may sign up
for the week you want or you
may phone Ann Chapman at
565-2619 or Lois Lance, 365-
2609. Summer residents are
very welcome.
