HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1973-05-17, Page 3THURSDAY, MAY 17, 1973 Unit 4 of UCW pian barbecue Unit IV of Hensall United Church Women met with Unit T on Thursday afternoon at the church, Mrs. Howard Scane pre- sided and gave an inspiring devotional on the theme "Live one day at a time." Hymns were sung with Mrs, J,C, Goddard accompanying, Mrs. Scane gave the. Bible reading and led in prayer. Mrs. Walter Spencer and Mrs. Albert Shirray presented a film strip entitled "Towards self help in India." Mrs. Shirray comm- entated on "New Horizons for India's Women." Mrs. Spencer and Mrs. Shirray were thanked by Mrs. Scane. Mrs. McAllister thanked Unit I for permitting Unit IV to enjoy their program. During the business portion of the meeting, plans were finalized for Unit Iv's part in the Beef Barbecue on May 30. It was decided to entertain the Home Helpers in September and the flower committee for June was named. Mrs. Mickle took up the offering, and lunch was served by the committee in charge. Z.IIRICH CITIZENS NEWS Hensall WI' hear of The May "Grandmothers" meeting of the Hensall Worn - en's Institute was held in the Legion Hall on Wednesday evening. New president Hilda Payne warmly welcomed mem- bers and guests. The roll call was answered with 'Your Grandmother's occupation," The treasurer's report was given by Marg Ing- ram. Janis Bisback gave a rep- ort an the short course "Choosing and using Fabrics" held in the Legion Hall on May 1. Joyce Pepper also gave a rep- ort on the 4-H Achievement Day held in the Stephen Central School recently. The district annual meeting will be held on May 16 in Caven Presbyterian Church, in Exeter. Six members plan to attend. It was decided to ask the 4-H girls, their mothers and leaders to attend a supper on June 13 in Kippen United Church for a strawberry supper. All W.I. members and 4-H girls are to meet at the Legion Hall that evening at 4:45 to go to the church, Members will meet at the Legion Hall after the sup- per for a short meeting. Program convenors were PAGE 3 St.Joseph Beryl Elgie and Myrtle Sherritt. Everyone joined in a sing -song with Greta Lammie at the piano. Musical numbers for the evening were performed by the Finlayson sisters. Shelley, Sandra and Sue Ann sang two numbers and Sandra and Shelley did a tap dance routine. Mary Broadfoot accompanied the girls on the piano. Mrs. Rundle of Exeter dem- onstrated the art of making things out of bread mixed with white glue to make a pliable dough, that can be made into many things like flowers, fruit, leaves and made into pictures and floral arrangements. Art- icles she had made were passed around for everyone to see. Edna Stoneman introduced the guest speaker, Joe Wooden, Principal of South Huron Dist- rict High School. He showed slides on the St. Joseph area and talked on some of the history of our area and also the history of St. Joseph, and one man, Narcisse M. C antin's dream of making St. Joseph a booming town. Hazel Consitt gave courtesy remarks and Myrtle Sherritt presented gifts to the entertain- ers. Prizes were presented to grandmothers with the following, Birthday in May, Grace Peck; lives the furthest away, Mrs. Spaulding, Anna Maria Florida, youngest grandchild, Winnie Skea; most buttons, Hilda Payne; biggest purse, Myrtle Orr. Host- esses were Winnie Skea and Sus- an Purdy, Hensall United Church was filled Sunday morning for the Christian Family Service and Infant Baptism. Rev. Don Beck chose to preach on the sermon topic "What makes a Christian Home?" and the choir sang an anthem with Harry Horton tak- ing a solo part. Daniel Peter, infant son of Mr, an d Mrs, Robert McNaughton, was pres- ented for baptism at Hensall church, and Christopher Derek Sararas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Sararas was presented for baptism at the Chiselhurts United Church. Hensall firemen have announced that again this year they will be having a Fire Works Display on Monday May 21, at the Hensall Park. A collection will be taken at this time as well as a $50 draw prize awarded. Area students graduate (continued from page 1) Susan Riehl of New Hamburg, the Western Ontario Veterinary Medical Association award as the runner-up in animal health; Both these awards were pres- ented by Dr. Garnet Leitch, of Zurich, Gordon McKay of Embro and Diane Walker of Thorndale, the Junior Farmers' Association of Ontario scholarship as the top academic students at Centralia College who are junior farmer members. Two students from the Zurich area, Miss Annette Zimmer and Peter Groot, were among the graduating class. Organist for the ceremony was Mrs. Jack Turkheim, of Zurich.
