EASTER ECUMENICAL SERVICE The Easter Ecumenical Serv- ice in the United Church base- ment was opened by Mrs. Key's story of Kindness not only to our own church members. Mrs. Kennedy led an Easter devotion- al period followed by songs from R.C. and U.C. hymn books led by Mrs. Marlene Bren- ner. After a collection of "Pen- nies for Peace" Mrs. Pat Kading introduced Mrs. Gwyn Whils- mith who was attired in the native costume of Israel to give her talk and show slides on Israel. She and her sister visited a refugee camp as big as Exeter where diet was 1000 calories per person a day, water supply was limited, and fifty persons shared a washroom. The Refug- ee Fund provides 151 upkeep. "Inter -Church Aid" is doing good work in the Health Clinic to train mothers in child care and feeding of a balanced diet to infants. From tents in 1948 the refugees now live in 9 x 9 foot cement block homes for each family, regardless of size. They grow their own gardens. They are a people without a country. Achievement Day for the 4-H was held at the Stephen Town- ship School, Crediton on Satur- day. More parents attended since it was nearer home. The morning was for quizzes and the afternoon program fashion shows by eight groups. All members "The Knotty Knits" got 4-H spoons. Matilda Van Leeuwen got County Honours. The survey lasted three weeks, utilized a total of twelve man - weeks, and resulted in the ex- amination of 630 miles of shore- line involving the inspection of 16, 724 private sewage disp- osal systems. Of these, 9, 723 were unaffect ed by the high waters and 7, 001 would not function properly. Of those which were unoperat- ive, the following conditions were found: 32% of the systems had water levels less than two feet below grade; eight per cent were surface flooded; and two percent had erosion damage. No estimate has been made of financial loss or the cost of replacing damaged or flooded systems with new systems at a safer elevation.
