Advice for business
Small businesses within a 60 -
mile radius of London can get
some expert business help from
senior students in the School of
Business Administration at the
University of Western Ontario
this summer.
Dean J.J. Wettlaufer has an-
nouced the school will again
sponsor a Small Business Assist-
ance Program which was introd-
uced last summer as a pilot
project.
The program will again be
funded by the Ontario Ministry
of Industry and Tourism and
Imperial Oil Limited.

MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTIONS
In Quebec, reports Con-
sumers' Association of Canada,
a magazine subscription cont-
ract between a consumer and
door-to-door salesman must,
by law, contain certain inform-
ation. The language in which
the publication is written, the
duration and price of the sub-
scription as well as the retail
price of each magazine when
bought in single issues must be
indicated in the document.
will be available from May to
August to give assistance in such
areas as cash management and
planning, costing systems and
controls, marketing, bookeepinf
inventory control and site locat-
ion.
Dean Wettlaufer explains that
the service is available to any
retail, manufacturing or service
business which is Canadian -own-
ed (preferably owner -operated)
and financially unable to afford
professional consulting fees.
Although funds from the Gov-
ernment will cover the major
part of the costs, a nominal fee
will be charged to cover out-of-
pocket expenses. Firms which
are unable to afford any pay-
ment will also be considered.
Of the area firms that applied
last year, 37 were given assist-
ance under the program.
So successful was the program
last year, says Professor John
Graham, one of five faculty
advisors, that the Government
and Imperial Oil have decided
to sponsor the program again
this year in the London area, as
well as in several other centres.
Prof. Graham illustrated the
kind of service the student bus-
iness advisors can provide by
citing the case of one of last

year's clients who sought help
with what he identified as a
"financial problem. "
"A thorough study of this firm
by the student consultants show-
ed that the real problem wasn't
financial as such, but one of a
too large inventory. As a result
of this study, we advised him
on a proper inventory level and
helped set an inventory control
system that resulted in a better
cash position for the firm."
Because the consultants must
have access to financial state-
ments, cost data, and other
internal information, the
School scrupulously keeps its
material confidential.
