Rising prices seemed to be
the issue of the day as the legis
lature resumed its proceedings
on Monday of this week. Dairy
producers were granted a 500
per hundredweight increase in
the price of milk which amount
ed to 1 1/3 cents per quart. The
dairies, maintaining that their
costs have risen since their last
increase on January 1, responder
by raising the price of milk to
the consumer by two to three
cents a quart. Meat prices
reached an all time high and
apparently provoked the con-
sumers into boycotting meat
products at the retail level.
Bell Canada's price increases
sanctioned by the Canadian
Transport Commission, met
with disapproval by other seg-
ments of society and enacted
opposition members into call-
ing on the Government to use
the powers it has under the law
to rescind the decision of the
Canadian Transport Commiss-
ion.
In connection with food costs,
I listened to comments by
consumers about the rising price
for which the farmer was being
blamed and I asked the Minist-
er of Agriculture in the Legis-
latures question and answer per-
iod, if he would assume the
responsibilities of his ministry
and use every means possible
to disseminate information to
the public revealing the farm-
ers cost of production. I indic-
ated to him it was time the
consumers realized that the
farmer was barely making a
satisfactory standard of living
even at the prices he receives
today for his products, for the
price which he must pay for
grains and more particularly for
protein supplements has more
than doubled in the last six
months.
In all due respect to the
Minister of Agriculture and
Food, I was disappointed with
his answer for it did not pert-
ain to my question in any way.
Rather he condemned the Fed-
eral Government for allowing
the importation of beef from
U.S.A. into Canada at a time
when consumer boycotts were
having a very definate effect
on meat prices in the States.
He also condemned the Federal
Government for allowing beef
which has been fed diethylstil-
bestrol to be imported from the
States into Canada, particu'.arly
when the use of such a drug
was banned in Canada. I agree
with Mr. Stewart on both mat-
ters, but I was disgruntled with

Premier Davis also showed
his concern about rising prices,
and spent most of the week in
Alberta attempting to prevent
a rapid escalation of energy
costs which inevitably would
hurt many of Ontario's indust-
ries. He proposed a National
Conference on energy involving
Ottawa and the Provincial Gov-
ernments, but it doesn't appear
that he convinced Alberta Prem.
ier, Peter Lougheed.
Meanwhile back on the home
front, Opposition pressure on
the Health Minister, Mr. Potter,
continued, and as a result the
Minister is introducing programs
to bring the health costs under
control. life plans to cut the
administrative role of his dep-
artments medical doctors and
rely more heavily on profession-
al administrators. He outlined
two ministry groups which will
divide medical and administ-
rative responsibilities. The
Health Standards Group would be
responsible for the develop-
ment of criteria and guidelines
for the health care program, the
evaluation of services, and the
provision of advisory and tech-
nical services,
The Health Services Group
will be responsible for the day-
to-day administration of serv-
ices provided by the ministry.
Ministry personnel with medical
qualifications will not be invol-
ved with ongoing administration,
for according to Dr. Potter,
doctors are poor administrators.
Dr. Potter, under constant
pressure by Robert Nixon and
Stephen Lewis, studied the
latest figures available on the
cost of OIIIP and now realizes
that the medicare program has
been abused and has been bilk-
ed for untold millions by doctors
