TODAY'S CHILD
BY HELEN ALLEN
There is something of a contradiction about this good-looking
boy.
He looks younger than his 12 years because he is slight and
small -boned but he seems to be older when he gets talking about
his interests which are many.
Anglo-Saxon and Polish in background, Ray has fair hair, blue
eyes and clear fair skin.
Ray is in Grade Five. He is not especially academically
minded but his school work has been improving.
Outside school Ray is always busy. He is keen on sports and
plays most team games as well as enjoying swimming and
skating. Ile belongs to the Navy League corps and is involved in
a community drama program and in a church sponsored youth
group. He attends Sunday School regularly.
Ray enjoys music and like many other lads, he carries his
transistor radio wherever he goes. He follows a number of
television programs.
Ray's hobby is stamp collecting and he is getting to the point
of specializing rather than collecting everything available. He is
interested in travelling and seeing new places.
Enthusiasm for the outdoors makes Ray think farm life would
be great. He likes camping, hiking and picnics.
For a time Ray was apprehensive about adoption but now this
likeable lad is anxious to meet people who will want him as their
son.
To inquire about adopting Ray, please write to Today's Child,
Box 888, Station K, Toronto. For general adoption information,
please contact your local Children's Aid Society.

Farmers upset
over wrong
weather forecast
(by Keith Roulston)
The Huron County Federation
of Agriculture agreed Thursday
night to support the Huron
County Crop Improvement Ass-
ociation in disputing weather
forecasts.
A letter from the Crop Invest-
ment Association was read at
the regular meeting of the Fed-
eration which claimed farmers
had suffered crop losses this
year because of the inaccuracy
of weather forecasts eminating
from the Mount Forest weather
station via local radio station.
The Crop Improvement Assdc-
iation has sent letters to Robert
McKinley, MP for Huron, the
weather station and CKNX radio
complaining about the service.
The complaint said that the
forecast said farmers cou11
expect 24 to 36 hours of good
harvesting weather before a
weather front would move in
while stations in the Detroit area
were saying it would be only six
to nine hours before rain could
be expected. Many farmers
went ahead with operations. such
as bean pulling only to find
that the Detroit forecasts were
unfortunately more accurate
than those of Mount Forest. The
letter claimed many beans were
lost because of this.
It was felt that the forecasts
came from Toronto and were
only relayed through Mount
Forest. Since weather systems
moved in from the west, it was
felt the forecasts did not take
this time difference into effect.
During the discussion on the
letter, John Stafford, past pres-
ident of the Federation comm-
ented "They usually can fore-
cast what happened yesterday --
that's about as close as they
come."
At the Thursday meeting the
group also agreed to form a
committee to prepare a brief
to be presented to the Select
Legislature Committee on
Municipal Drains when it meets
The name "Yukon" was first
used by J. Bell of the Hudson's
Bay Company in 1846. It comes
from the Indian word "Yakakat"
which means Big River. Bell
wrote the name as "Youc on. "
in this area. Such a meeting is
espected some time in the new
year.
Four county executive memb-
ers were elected at the meeting.
They are; John Stafford, R. 12.1,
Wroxeter; Vince Austin ,
Dungannon; Adrian Vos, Blyth
and Gordon Blanchard, R, R. 4,
