Retarded group plan annual
Staff members from the
London Development Centre
and the Children's Psychiatric
Research Institute of London
which serves fourteen counties,
addressed the November meet-
ing of the South Huron and
District Association for the
Mentally Retarded, last week.
Anna McFerran of the develop
ment centre showed slides of
various handicapped children
under the centre's care and
emphasized that it was not a
Day Care centre in the ordinary
sense, but a place where child-
ren who had been selected for
their extreme handicaps were
receiving training. She told of
the great satisfaction enjoyed
by the staff and volunteers and
the children themselves when
some of the most basic learning
steps are taken.
The other speaker, John
Gerhard of CPRI, told of his
experience in finding that much
could be accomplished by gett-
ing Parents' Associations,
Psychiatric Hospitals, Research
Centres, Welfare offices, and
family services to know each
other. He finds that his work
as a social worker seems more
effective when he can get par-
ents and others to co-ordinate
their knowledge and efforts.
He spoke of getting parents
prepared to receive handicapped
children back from the large
institutions and of helping par-
ents to adjust so as to prevent
placing some of the handicapped
in the institutions. He also
observed that more parents need
to get involved in their local
Associations for the Retarded
and to keep informed about nurs-
As Home Care is at present
an Active Rehabilitation prog-
ram with expectations of recover
within 30 days, there is still a
need for help in providing
adequate care, so that patients
with a longstanding condition,
such as arthritis or heart dis-
ease could receive enough care
to remain at home. Perhaps,
,in the future, this care will
become a vailable for these pat-
ients.

Mrs. Gerald Godbolt, presid-
ent of the SHDAMR called for
the various reports at the meet-

Public School. Olga Zemitis re-
ported on attending the October
Conference in Ontario of YACMI
Youth Across Canada for the
Mentally Retarded, at which
new ideas for recreation for
mentally handicapped children
and adults were learned. Case
Van Raay reported on changes
being made in the Association's
property at Dashwood to make
it into an effective adult work-
shop with not only work but also
a recreational and social train-
ing program. Visits are being
made to Sarnia and Stratford to
see the newly opened workshops
in those centres.
Mrs. MacGregor of the Huron
Hope School at Huron Park
reported that a newly designed
set of games and learning mat-
erials was being put to use. She
also told of a visit the pupils
had made to the fire hall and of
receiving a visit from the OPP
so that the pupils would be
informed of traffic signs and
safety measures they could
take when out.
Adrienne Van Raay, president
of the local YACMR, told of a
party held for the residents of
Braemore Manor and the potent-
ial workshop trainees in October
She mentioned a training prog-
ram for volunteer youth workers
and advertised Christmas Cards
which YACMR are selling for
funds for the Association.
