The other speaker, John Gerhard of CPRI, told of his experience in finding that much could be accomplished by gett- ing Parents' Associations, Psychiatric Hospitals, Research Centres, Welfare offices, and family services to know each other. He finds that his work as a social worker seems more effective when he can get par- ents and others to co-ordinate their knowledge and efforts. He spoke of getting parents prepared to receive handicapped children back from the large institutions and of helping par- ents to adjust so as to prevent placing some of the handicapped in the institutions. He also observed that more parents need to get involved in their local Associations for the Retarded and to keep informed about nurs- As Home Care is at present an Active Rehabilitation prog- ram with expectations of recover within 30 days, there is still a need for help in providing adequate care, so that patients with a longstanding condition, such as arthritis or heart dis- ease could receive enough care to remain at home.
