Zurich Flyers
lose contest to
Exeter Juniors,
The Zurich Flyers lost a
thrilling 6-5 exhibition hockey
game to the Exeter Junior Hawk:
on Sunday afternoon, in the
local arena. The Exeter squad
were last year's all -Ontario
Junior D champions, while the
Zurich Flyers won the South
Huron Hockey League title.
Two early goals in the first
period gave the Hawks a 2-0
lead, but before the session had
ended Zurich roared back with
two big markers to even the
score at 2-2. Jim Guenther and
Peter Kleinstiver gave Exeter
their early lead, while Fred
Lamb and Paul Corriveau bang-
ed in the equalizers for the
Flyers.
The only scoring in the
middle stanza was by Exeter,
when Randy Gilfilian and Ger-
ald Weido both found the range,
within one minute of each
other.
Harry Smits and Jim Guenther
with his second goal of the
game, shot the visitors into a
6-2 lead early in the third per-
iod, before the Flyers finally
found the range and replied
with three big goals. At the
10.04 mark Dick Bedard scored,
and then at 12.20 Paul Corriv-
eau registered his second goal
of the game. The final Zurich
counter was registered by Kev-
in McKinnon with four minutes
left to play. Even though the
Flyers staged a desperate att-
empt to tie the score in the
dying minutes of the game,
their efforts were in vain.
A total of 17 penalties were
handed out in the game, with
nine of them going to Zurich
and eight to Exeter.
The Exeter team this year
has at least four players who
came up through the minor rank:
in Zurich. Gerald Weido and
John Mommersteeg, both from
last year's Midget team, are
lining up with the Hawks and
giving a good account of them-
selves. Also in the lineup is
Harry Smits, of the Grand Bend
area, who played for Zurich
Midgets two years ago, and ,Tim
Guenther, of Dashwood, who
played midget hockey for Zur-
ich three years ago.
Next home game for the
Flyers in South Huron Hockey
League action is this Sunday
afternoon, when Hensall Cas-
cadians supply the opposition
for a 2 p.m. game. Tonight,
Thursday, the Flyers play the
Cascadians in the Hensall Arena.
