HIGH WINDS CAUSE DAMAGE - Extensive damage was caused along
the shores of Lake Huron over the past weekend when high winds sent
huge waves well up on the shoreline. This photo shows some of the
debris washed up on the shore at St. Joseph, while many cottagers
reported their boats missing after being washed out into the lake.
Damage was also caused along the river -front at Grand Bend from the
same high winds.

He said that the present unemp-
loyment insurance set up made
it hard to get farm help be-
cause the workers would rather
draw unemployment insurance
than work. And, he claimed,
the government rather than
encouraging a sugar beet indust-
ry in Ontario had hindered it
by refusing to guarantee that
if a plant for processing the
sugar was built quota of 20
per cent of the Canadian mark-
et would be set aside for Can-
adian -produced sugar.
Mrs. Weary said NDP polic-
ies were aimed at halting the
erosion of rural communities,
The NDP promises, she said,
to set up a farm machinery
board which would look after
a machinery testing program
and bring about standardization
of farm machinery and set up a
program to encourage manuf-
acture and importation of farm
machinery.
An NDP government would
set up a commission to study
the best size for a farm unit
and would bring in a land bank
which would buy up land which
was for sale and lease it back
to farmers so they would not
have to invest so much in land.

It would prohibit foreign and
corporate takeover of land and
provide low-interest loans to
young farmers to help them get
started. She said there must be
more planning in rural commun-
ities with more decentralization
and involvement of the local
people.
During the question period,
Phil Durand, speaking for the
Federation claimed that farmers
were subsidizing low food prices
for consumers. He said that
farmers were suffering with low
incomes in order to keep food
prices down. He asked if some-
thing could be done to stop
this.
Mrs. Weary said that food
prices must be kept down but
that the farmer should not be
the one to pay for low prices.
"If this means subsidizing the
farmer then this must be done, "
she said.
Mr. McKinley claimed the
present government has a cheap
food policy and believes farm-
ers should be maintained only
to produce cheap food. The
Conservatives, on the other
hand, he said, believe that if
the farmer is in good financial
shape, the whole economy will
be in good shape.
Mr. Thomas replied that the
only cheap food policy the
Liberals had was that they did
a great deal of research to find
ways for farmers to produce
food as cheaply as possible,
