50 Years Ago
At the auction sale of house-
hold effects and dwelling prop-
erty of Mrs. Elizabeth Geiger,
on Saturday, the property was
auctioned off to Mr. Herb
Mousseau for the sum of $875.
Mr. Mousseau intends moving
thereon shortly.
Mr. Norman Rupp and family
of Detroit, is visiting with his
mother, Mrs. H. Rupp, the
latter having moved into the
house owned by Mrs. A. Smith.
Wilbur Dewey of Grand Bend
broke his wrist last week while
cranking a car.
Mr. Ed Wurm and family are
this week moving their house-
hold effects to Markham,
where Mr. Wurm has purchased
a livery, bus and drag business.
Mr. Hartman Elsie, Dashwood
wishes to advise the public that
he is again in a position to do
any kind of pump repair work,
wooden pumps repaired, iron
pumps repaired and installed.
Mr. James Denomy of the
14th concession Hay, had the
misfortune the other day, of
being thrown out of his speeding ,
cart, and fractured his collar-
bone.
40 Years Ago
• Zurich Jubilee Band, as well
as a large number of citizens
are at Exeter this afternoon,
where the Rt. Hon. MacKenzie
King is addressing a large gath-
ering, Wednesday afternoon,
and Wednesday evening at Sea -
forth. We trust the boy's music
will appeal to this great states-
man.
Mr. Philip Randall and fam-
ily, of Hanover, was in town
one day last week, having with
him a four wheel rolling home,
evidently out on a camping
trip, Mr. Randall is an old
Zurich boy, and a goodly numb-
er of citizens remember him.
Mrs. D. Paisley and children
have returned to their home in
Montreal, after a pleasant visit
with her mother, Mrs. E. Rennie
of Hensall.
The local ball fans are spend-
ing the afternoons in front of the
loudspeaker of the radio these
days, as the world series base-
ball games are being played this

Zurich I and SV groups of
4-H girls held their second
meeting on Wednesday, Sept-
ember 27, at Mrs. Oke's
home with 19 members present.
Since all of the meetings
consist of meal preparation, we
begin at 4.30, so that we can
have our business and discussions
first and then we ate divided
into groups to share the cooking
and cleaning up.
Doug O'Brien demonstrated
the proper method of lighting a
barbecue to the group. Our
leaders, Mrs. Oke, Mrs. Duch-
arme and Sally Dietrich, helped
us to prepare hamburgs and
vegetable kabobs on the barbe-
cue.
The meal was complete with
salad, freshie and brownies.
After the dishes were washed
and kitchen tidied up we adjour-
ned.

Ralph Krueger has been award,
ed the "Helen M. Benson Prize"
for highest standing in Astron-
omy in the University of West-
ern Ontario 1947 Summer
School. He also received first
and second class standing in two
other subjects he took last sum-
mer.
Zurich and district are very
fortunate in having a barrister
make a weekly call at present.
Mr. Elmer D. Bell, B.A., Bar-
rister, of Exeter, is in the new
Township Clerk's office every
Wednesday afternoon, for the
convenience of his many clients
in this vicinity.
Mr. W.H. Brokenshire, our
Township and Village Clerk
has now got nicely settled in
the new office the Township
of Hay has purchased from Mr.
A.F. Hess recently. The fire-
proof vault in this building will
take care of all the valuable
papers and documents. The
former room of the clerk was
in the Bank of Montreal build-
ing.
Mr. Gordon Eagleson of
Montreal is spending a few days
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Eagleson, of Dashwood.

The new $112, 000 public
school at Hensall will be offic-
ially opened on October 18.
G. Duffin, of the Department
of Education will officiate.
Saturday was a big day for
the children of town and com-
munity, as the minature merry-
go-round owned and operated
by the Weston Bread Company,
was in front of the Superior
Food Market, of Charles Thiel
and all the kiddies got their
free rides.
Reeve V.L. Becker; clerk
H. W .. Brokenshire of Hay Town-
ship, and Mrs. Albert Kalbfl-
eisch representing the Zurich
Chamber of Commerce, as a
delegation. were in Goderich
on Tuesday, in the interest of
the Township securing some
lake frontage land suitable for
a public park or picnic grounds.
In the 1946 to 1956 period
labour income in Canada rose
168 per cent, compared to an
increase of 104 per cent in the
United States in the same period
Miss Arlene Haberer, of the
Victoria Hospital, School of
Nursing, London, spent a few
days at her home here over the
weekend.
Mr. Ed Reichert of the Bank
of Montreal staff is spending
several weeks at Torono

Huron County Clerk -treasurer,
John G. Berry, administered
the oath of office to Deputy -
reeve Delbert Geiger, of Hay
Township, at the one -day sess-
ion of the county council last
Friday. Mr. Geiger replaces
Karl Haberer, who resigned to
accept the position of road
superintendent for Hay.
The left-hand golfers had
their day at Bayfield -Clinton
Golf Course on S•.turday, Sept -
ember 15. John Robinson, Stan-
ley Township farmer, carded an
82 to lead the field of 29 entries
Lloyd Lovell, James McAllist-
er, John Soldan and Ross Love
attended the sod -turning of the
Fame Plant at Ayr, last Wed-
nesday.
A draw was recently held at
Bob's Barber Shop, Zurich, in

connection with the grand open-
ing of the establishment. Win-
ner of a year's supply of free
hair cuts was Glenn Deitz, of
London.
Miss Donna Turnbull, of
Grand Bend, whose wedding to
Glenn C. Thiel, of Zufich will
take place October 6, at Grand
Bend Church of God, was the
guest of honour at a pre -nuptial
shower.
