Nutrition important
(This message is brought to you
as a public service, through
the courtesy of Hensall District
Co -Operative.)
Feeding is one of the key
environmental influences that
affect reproduction in beef
cattle (or any other class of
livestock, for that matter).
Most breeding failures, low
percent calf crops or late calves
somehow are related to poor
nutrition of feed management.
A beef cow's feed require-
ments build from a low point
at calf weaning time, to a peak
after calving when the cow is
producing milk. This also coin-
cides with the breeding time
for the cow.
She requires extra feeding
during gestation to supply nut -

dents to the embryo calf, and
to have the cow in good shape
when she calves. When she is
called upon to provide milk for
her calf, particularly if it is a
heavy calf, her feed needs may
nearly double the cow's require-
ments after the calf is weaned.
Consequences of low feed
supply at this critical stage is
loss in body fat and weight..
Research work has shown that
to get best reproduction rate,
cows should gain 1/2 lb. to 3/4
lb. per day after calving througl
out the breeding season. If the
cow is thin before calving,
these weight gains will be exp-
ensive
