Zurich Citizens News, 1971-12-23, Page 31THURSDAY, DECEMBER' 23, 1971 ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS Zurich Flyers down Dashwood (by Doug Turkheim) During the past week the Zurich Flyers posted another big victory as they downed the highly -rated Dashwood Bears by a 5-3 margin. This marked the first victory over the Bears for the Zurich crew. The same two teams will meet again ori Boxing Day, December 27, with the game starting at 2 p,m. This should promise to be a big event with the flyers working on getting some old faces back in their line-up. Sports fans in the area feel with this help the Flyers will be hard to beat. The first period was only two minutes olcl when Kevin McKin- non tipped in a pass off .the stick of Paul Coriiveau, to put them in front 1- 0. Before the midway mark of the period Joe Regier scored on a play assisted by Gord Vincent and Larry McCann, to even things at 1-1. Forty-five seconds later Ron Corriveau scored a picture goal to again put the Flyers in front. Before the period ended Dashwood again tied things up with Joe Regier scoring his second goal of the game. Ron Desjardine scored two quick goals in the second stanza to put Zurich ahead 4-2. In both cases Ron Corriveau picked up an assist on the play. Thirty seconds later Bob Merrier knock- ed in a pass from Paul Corriveau, to give the Flyers a convincing 5-2 lead. Dashwood was unable to come up with another goal for the remainder of the middle period. Dashwood came up 47. Between the two arch -rivals there were only a total of eight penalties being called with the Dashwodd Bears draw- ing five while the Flyers were called for three. 0 Hensall Bantams down Zurich by 6-1 score (by Doug Turkheim) Last Thursday night the Zur- ich Bantams met another defeat when they played host to Hen- sall and were downed 6-1. Hensall opened the scoring at the 3:40 mark of the first period on a goal by Steve Knight with Jamie Caldwell drawing an assist. Less than a minute later Hensall jumped into a 2-0 lead when Jamie Cald- well tipped in a pass from Perry Mattson. At the midway mark of the period Zurich scored thiir lone goal with Wayne Clarke being the marksman, and Barry Hess drawing an assist. The only goal of the second stanza was scored near the end of the period when Fred Camp- bell took a pass from Ian Mc- Millan and Mike Veal, and went in to beat the Zurich goalic and give them a 3-1 lead. In the final period Hensall scored three unanswered goals in less than three minutes, to assure them of a victory. Hensall mark • man in the final stanza were Fred Campbell, Mike Veal, and Rodger Dougall, who all scored on lone attempts. There were six penalties called with Zurich drawing five and Hensall one. 0 Zurich Bantams lose to Goderich (by Doug Turkheim) Last Friday night the Zurich Bantams were faced with another loss in WOAA action as they were downed 6-2 by a tough Goderich team. Doug Marshall shot Goderich into a 1-0 lead early in the first period. At the 14.15 mark of the period Wayne Clarke tipped in a pass off the stick of Fred Mommersteeg to leave the score at 1-1 tie. With less than a minute left to play in the period, Alan Worgan banged in another goal for Goderich to give them a slight 2-1 edge going into the second. The only goal of the second period came at the 5.30 mark when Brian Yeoman scored on a passing play from teammates Ken Sheton. Early in the final period God- erich jumped into a 4-1 lead when Brian Yeoman rallied for his second goal of the night. Zurich finally found the range for their second goal at the 6.02 marl< of the period when Barry Hess scored on a lone attempt, to narrow the lead to 4-2. Two quick unanswered goals by Doug Marshall and Grant Shelton as- sured Goderich of their victory. There were seven team pen- alties called with Goderich draw- ing nine minor penalties and one major, while Zurich collect- dd six minors and one major, both majors being fighting pen- alties.
