Mr. Bailey, of R. R.3, Blyth. was speaking at a directors' meeting of the Iluron federation, In 1971 individual service membership totalled 6, 204, far below the 9, 000 total the OFA needs to break even financially, he said. Individual service member- ship - introduced two years ago permits farmers to join on an individual basis rather than on a regional basis. From a report prepared by a special four -man committee of the OFA - on which 1.1r. Bailey served - it was revealed that membership fees in 1968 across Ontario totalled $118, 207 compared to $9,18104 in 1971. Mervyn Smith, of R, R,1, Walton, a vice-president of the Huron federation said vol- unteer recruitment of individual service members is not working out. Trends indicate that the county membership fee will continue to decline, Mr. Smith said, but added that until the new system of individual mem- bership was brought .in, the OFA was on its way out. "It wouldn't have lasted more than a couple of months, " he said. Jack McGregor, a hog farmer from R. R.2, Kippers, said the federation is fighting for every- thing for everybody and "there are too few doing too much for everybody." The directors will study the recommendations made by the special committee, one of which proposed the establish- ment of regional offices based on a minimum of 3, 000 farmers. A full-time secretary field man would spend his working hours selling memberships. • Pay yourself first!
