30,000 cars were provided by
dealers for use as driver -
training vehicles in 1970.
Success is reported in use of
dual -fuel vehicles (liquified
natural gas used on open
road, and gasoline used in
city traffic).

Last winter, more than 9
million tons of de-icing salt
were spread on roads.

The U.S. government has
issued a $570,000 grant for
design study of a steam -
powered vehicle.
Study shows there is no
reduction in a driver's
reaction time after many
hours behind the wheel.
Danger lies in total failure to
respond to changing
conditions — a momentary
hypnotic trance.

Chalky white or dark patches
on frozen turkey promise a dry,
tough Christmas dinner.
White areas and dark patches
are "freezer burn." Freezer
burn results when frozen foods
lose, mo.is[ure. It means food
has not been properly harid2ed --
or stored. -
Partial thawing and refreez-
ing is a common cause of
freezer burn.
Snow removal
Snow removal can be a long
and exhausting chore. However,
Professor R. Irwin, School of
Engineering, University of
Guelph, says there are altern-
atives to the long -handled snow
shovel.
Electric snowthrowers are
available in widths up to 18
inches. Under ideal conditions,
they can clear about 225 shovels
ful of snow per minute. Throw-
ers powered by gasoline motors
can be obtained in larger 22
to 26 inch models. Both
electric°'and' gasoline snow -
throwers are adjustable for
height.
Small tractors used to cut
grass can be fitted with a 86 -
,cPAGE11'
inch blade in the front. However
snow removal requires a great
deal of power, and to be effect-
ive, the tractor should be over
seven horsepower.
Equipment should also be suit-
ed to the surface being cleared.
Several types of throwers will
make gouges in the driveway.
However, snow removal equip
merit can pose some problems.
The number of days when it is
needed are few in many areas of
Ontario. There is often a prob-
lem in housing it and it does
require servicing for reliable
winter operation. :If.yur-.ha'd
trouble starting your lawn mow-
er in the summer, you can
expect even less co-operation
from your lawn snowthrower
unless it is properly taken care
of.
