J Props; nic acid causes accidents The dangers associated with the use of propionic acid were illustrated this week by two accidents in southwestern Ontaric Propionic acid is very effect- ive in preserving high moisture corn, but it must be treated with respect, says Hal Wright, farm safety specialist with the Ontario Deparment of Agricult- ure and Food. A man's face was sprayed with acid in the first accident, when a hose broke during appli- cation. While the skin was peel- ed off, fortunately there was no eye damage. In the second accident, a woman was found unconscious after mixing the acid with corn. She is still on the critical list in hospital, possibly with perm- anent lung damage. Because of the dangers, the importance of reading and fol- lowing manufacturer's instruct- ions cannot be overemphasized. Goggles and rubber gloves should be worn because the com- pound is corrosive and irritating to the skin and eyes. When prolonged exposure to the gas is likely, a self-contained breath- ing apparatus should be used. Propionic acid is also flam- mable and can explode when the air/gas mixture is right. All potential sources of ignition should be removed from the area. Grain may be augered, lifted or conveyed immediately fol- lowing treatment. However, it should not be blown until at least 30 minutes after treatment. Following manufacturer's instructions will prevent tragic accidents. 0 SALVATION ARMY HELPS Men and women behind bars are able to share in the bless- ings of Christmas through the Salvation Army, whose blue uniforms penetrate prison walls.
