More than 200 sat down at
the banquet and annual meeting
of the South Huron and District
Association for the Mentally
Retarded on November 24.
The event was held in the Dash-
wood Community Centre.
Don Nisbet, of Wardsville,
a vice-president of the Ontario
Association was guest speaker
and gave a brief outline of
some of the recommendations
of the Williston report on care
of the mentally retarded. Ile
said that if Ontario adopts the
report it will become one of the
most advanced of all provinces
or states in social legislation.
I'1r. Nisbet encouraged the
group to continue it's efforts to
establish a workshop for adult
retardates. As a provincial vice-
president he installed the exec-
utive board nominated and
elected, with past president
Ivan Sharrow conducting the
election.
The banquet and business
meeting was chaired by Mrs.
G. Godbolt, president of the
local association. Mrs. N.

Herumingway, on behalf of the
Association, presented a plaque
to the Grand Bend Caravan
of Alhambra,Lodge as a mark
of appreciation for the help
given by the Caravan to the
Association, especially in
providing premises in which
to operate the day nursery for
pre-school handicapped child-
ren,
In accepting the plaque,
Jerry Arnold said that the Grand
Bend Caravan was unique in
having its premises used as a
school in a Lodge organized
for and devoted to the care of
the Mentally Retarded.
Case Van Raay, chairman
of the banquet and special
events committee introduced
members of the Academy of
Musical Arts of Sarnia who with
students of the Exeter branch of
the Academy provided fine
musical entertainment.
An exciting part of the
program was an auction of
contents of a purse, conducted
by Doug and Jack Riddell. The
bidding was fast and ran high.
Mrs. Gladys Van Egmond and
Stewart McEwan joined the
regulars for the old time music,
dancing and sing - a - long on
Monday afternoon.
Kinettes, Carol Finch, Mary
Helen Clifford, Janet Jewitt,
Carol Bowker accompanied by
Chrystal Jewitt led the sing-
song on Wednesday at the
monthly program and tea spon-
sored by the Clinton Kinette
Club.
The residents of Huronview
were happy to have a return
visit from the Jolly Millers,
a group of entertainers from
Benmilier, for the Family Night
program. The variety program
included a one act play, several
action songs, a sing -a -long
by the group, drum selectior
by Ernie Pfrimmer with Mrs.
Barry Millian accompanying on
the piano for the musical
numbers.
It has been very encouraging
this month to have had the
assistance of some new volunt-
eers. We are afraid it will be
impossible to carry on some of
the programs without more
help, and we would be pleased
to hear from anyone interested
in volunteer work.
