A delicious smorgasbord dinner was served, and in this photo some of the visitors are seen as they fill their plates with the turkey, ham and all the trimmings, roin my window I'm writing this column the morning after the night before election night before. Wasn't that a kick in the head, eh? Wasn't that really something incredible? Talk about upsets. Of course, our office has the usual cross-section of voters, but this time there was a strong anti- Progressive Conservative trend within our ranks. On the street, I got those same anti- PC vibrations when I talked to people in general about the election. They told me they weren't happy with things as they are in the prov- ince but they expressed fear that the New Democrats would come to power and give us something much, much worse. The Liberal Party seemed to be ignored in this election. It was a PC- NDP battle all the way... and we saw who got the sweeping mandate. Well, I must admit I'm conc- erned. I'm really not sure that such a large majority govern- ment will be good for the prov- ince of Ontario.•..but the people have spoken and it will be people who will pay. One thing will be interesting in the next few weeks. We have been promised a mini- budget by Christmas and I'm willing to bet most of us won't consider it a gift. I may be wrong, of course, and I cert - BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER ainly hope that I am, but I have visions of all sorts of terrible things happening now that Bill Davis and his associates have such an overwhelming majority. That can't be healthy. It's like living in a village where there is only one store and you have no transportation out of, town. The merchant charges you whatever he thinks he needs, ant you have no alternative but to pay... unless, of course, you prefer to starve or to take up your roots and move on. I will never understand just how people figure things out. I've heard nothing but compl- aints from folks about the educ- ational system, the judicial system, the rising cost of living unemployment, health insur- ance and a few other dozen pro- blems. Everyone's screaming about something and on election day, they go out and give the government an even bigger majority than they had before. Who can understand it? I guess I'm some kind of a nut. It seems to me that if you are not happy with a situation you should change it and not put yourself in a position where the trouble could get worse. That sounded like pretty fair logic until last night when I watched the television reports of the election and knew that GUARANTEED CERTIFICATES and DEBENTURES FOR FIVE YEARS JOHN R. CONSITT 236-1332 -- ZURICH I had the wrong slant on things. Somebody told me that they believed that because people are frightened of the New Dem- ocratic Party and because they believed the Liberals didn't have a chance anyway, they went out and voted for the PCs. Could be. It sounds like some- thing a few people would do... but to react that way in such masses is hardly understandable. Stephen Lewis, of course, believes that it was the mass media campaign .. the millions of dollars, spent, in other words, by the PC Party, that R. S.C.C. And the old stalwart for the Liberals, Judy LaMarsh, said she found it impossible to imag- ine that people would elect a man (it was Bill Davis all the way, she said) without wanting to hear or to know his policy. And when it was almost all over, Bill Davis and his wife carne onto our television screen , , and darned if it wasn't still Bill Davis, his wife and his family. There was hardly a nod to the rest of the PC "team, " hardly a mention of the people who worked in the campaign and certainly no word about what to expect in the coming four years. All we got was the story about Mrs. Davis campaigning at her husband's side except for a couple of days through October - fest and about the Davis' eldest son who stole the show at a PC rally somewhere or other. You have to hand it to Davis. He has the people hogswaggled and loving it. As he says, he made no promises so he doesn't have to keep any. It was a smart campaign, 1 guess, and no one can blame Bill Davis. 1 just wish I didn't have to help pay the bills along with the folks who supported him. WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL... THANKS!! A special word ... to the growing number of volunteers who worked so hard and so well in our recent campaign. I very much appreciate your enthusiasm for the Progressive Conservative belief in responsible free enterprise and for my personal representation of this riding, and a commitment ... in line with Prime Minister Davis's efforts to make government more accessible to the people, I am making arrangements to establish easier communication from the riding to my office and to develop closer co-ordination with the Municipalities in Huron.
