News of Varna and District
(intended for last week)
The United Church Women
held their October meeting on
Thursday evening of last week
with the president, Mrs. Will-
iam Dowson leading. She gave
a Thanksgiving meditation.
Mrs. Ron Taylor read the scrip-
ture and read "Let us give
thanks." Mrs. Charles Reid
gave the meditation. Prayer
was given by Mrs. Ron Taylor.
There were 35 calls made to
sick and shut-ins during Sept-
ember. A thank -you letter was
read from Mission Services of
London for the bale of useful
articles which was sent recently.
Mrs. Fred McClymont took the
offering and it was dedicated
by Mrs. Perce Johnston. Plans
were made for a bake sale and
bobth at the auction sale on
October 23. The meeting was
closed by Mrs. Ron Taylor and
group two served lunch.
Thanksgiving Services in
Varna United Church Sunday
were well attended.
Rev. Murdock Morrison was in
charge of the service while the
choir, under the direction of
Mrs. Doug McAsh sang a Thanks
giving anthem.
The service will be withdrawn
next Sunday in the United
Church owing to Anniversary
Services in Goshen United
Church.

in Varna over the weekend
were Mr. Floyd McAsh of Ham-
ilton; Miss Fran Carpenter of
London; Mrs, Don Barker and
Glenn of King City; Mrs. Doug
Robinson, Lorrie Cathy and '
Carol of Willowclale and Mr.
and v1rs. Bob McClymont,
Michael and Shannon, of Guelph

EXPLORERS
The first meeting of the Varna
Explorers was held last Tuesday
with 11 members present and
Mrs. Pat Taylor and Mrs. Sharon
Chuter as leaders.
The officers elected were:
Bev Cantelon, president; Brenda
Dowson, secretary; Janie Chuter
treasurer; and Sandra Webster,
press reporter.
Bev Cantelon opened the
meeting. Roll call was answered
by naming a book of the Bible.
The offering was taken by
Luanne Taylor and the offering
prayer was given by Ann Marie
heard. • The president closed the
meeting with the Explorer pray-
er.
Provincial Police Report
On October 12, a car driven
by John Wilds, Dashwood, left
the second concession of Steph-
en and struck a hydro pole.
Constable Frank Giffin estimat-
ed damage at $200.
On October 14, a car driven
by Ernest Rowe, Camlachie,
skidded out of control on high-
way No. 83 west of Dashwood,
and damaged a wire fence
owned by Fergus Turnbull,
Dashwood. Constable Frank
Giffin estimated damage at
$180.
Constable Don Mason is inv-
estigating a hit and run accid-
ent which occured in Zurich
on October 15. A car owned by
Charles Regier, Zurich received
$10. damage when it was struck
while parked on the Main
Street, of Zurich.
Constable 13111 Glassford inv-
estigated an accident on Oct-
ober 17, which occured in Cent-
ralia, A car driven by Hendrick
Iviartyn, Huron Park, collided
with the old CNR station build-
ing. Damage was estimated at
$530. Mrs. Alice Martyn, a
passenger in the car was taken
to South Huron Hospital. She
was treated for injuries and
released.
A CCM man's bicycle, gold
in color, with chrome fenders
is being held at the Exeter
Detachment. The bicycle was
found in Huron Park on October
13, and the owner has not been
located.
Obituary
CARL STONEMAN
Carl Stoneman, R. R, 2,
Staffa, passed away in South
Huron hospital, Friday, Octob-
er 15, ifi his 80th year. Ile had
been a patient in the hospital
approximately three months.
Surviving are his wife, the
former Gertrude Mitchell;
one son, Benson, R, R.2, Staffa;
two grandsons; one sister, Mrs.
Edith Barnes, Kitchener.
Public funeral service, cond-
ucted by Rev. Donald R. Beck,
was held at Bonthron Funeral
home, on Monday, October
18, with burial in Staffa cemet-
ery. Bearers were, Elgin Hend-
rick, Arthur Dinnin, Harry Din-
nin, Victor Dinnin, Murray
Traquair and Earl Cook.
