Check carrots
before buying
Any green -shouldered carrot
deserves the cold shoulder from
you. Deep green shoulders on
carrots indicate bitter flavor.
There are several other
things to look for when buying
carrots. The partially transpar-
ent bags make careful inspect-
ion difficult, but you can still
check that carrots are clean,
smooth, firm, and free from
blemishes.
Carrots should be of an aver-
age size as oversize carrots
frequently have a hard pithy
core. Look for a smooth char-
acteristic shape. You call exp-
ect more preparation and waste
from carrots that are forked,
gnarled, or rough. This is not
a problem with graded carrots
sold in the supermarkets, but
it should be considered when
buying carrots directly from the
grower.
Store the carrots in a plastic
bag in the refrigerator, They
will stay firm and fresh for at
least 10 days.

cession of Hay Township when

bell, Dashwood, left the road.

the corner of Richmond and
Nelson Street. Constable Bill
Glassford estimated damage at

Licensed motor vehicles are
being used by local farmers to
pull farm wagons, gravity
boxes, etc. on the roads.
Farmers are reminded any type
of trailer or wagon being drawn
by a car or truck is considered
by law to be a trailer and there-
fore must be licensed according-
ly.

There are many ways to keep
geraniums alive over winter.
Geraniums can be kept in an
almost dormant state in a cool
moist basement. If this is riot
possible, the simplest method,
