Pictured above are two of the behind -the -scenes people
responsible for the success of CBC -TV's flagship information
series, Weekend, telecast from 10 to 11 p.m. Sundays. Execu-
tive producer Richard Nielsen (left) and senior producer Peter
Kappele contribute much of the journalistic. expertise and
editorial judgement that has made the series, in the words of
Knowlton Nash, "the most provocative but responsible program,
of its type". Weekend is now in its third season on,
CBC television.
New use for broken glass
Broken glass, the foe of
modern road transportation, is
being used by Labatt Breweries
of Canada Limited to create
smooth pavement at the comp-
any's London, Ontario brewery.
Glasphalt, a new paving form
made by substituting crushed
glass for gravel, has been plac-
ed in a 1, 000 square foot sect-
ion used for marshalling Lab-
att's fleet of golden tractor
trailer vehicles. The company
is giving the new substance a
test trial to see whether it is
a valid replacement for asphalt
and a new use of discarded glass.
Currently, Labatt's estimated
500 cubic yards of broken glass
per year at the London brewery
is carted away for such uses as
landfill.
The 75 cubic yards of broken
glass used in the Labatt exper-
iment represents about 300, 000
of the familiar brown beer
bottles used by the brewing ind-
ustry in Canada. Ninety-five

In the glasphalt process the
glass is crushed into small but
jagged pieces (by Riverside
Constructinn Company Limited]
in the same manner as gravel.
A special wetting agent is
added to the common asphalt
mix to bind the glass and elim-
inate the edges. The result:
smooth pavement.
"If this experiment is success-
ful, we would be willing to
give our broken glass away to
the producer, " said W.F. Read,
President of Labatt Breweries of
Canada Limited. "We realize
that the amount of broken glass
we could supply would not facil-
itate fulltime glasphalt product-
ion in London, but other glass -
handling industries may become
interested and together we
could support a worthwhile sol-
ution to the problem of glass
disposal."
