How to plant
trees and shrubs
Transplanting can damage
trees and plants if it is not done
properly. Use the following
• principles as a guide to safe
transferal.
Before starting, the soil should
be damp.
I Use a sharp spade to cut the
outer root of the plant and then
I dig a circular trench. Gradually
cut down the root ball to a size
which will sever the fewest roots.
Cut half way under the root ball'
I on the one side, then on the
other. A burlap sack or plastic
sheet should be rolled under the
root ball before moving the plant
At the new location dig a hold
about twice the size of the root
ball. Place several inches of top
soil mixture in the bottom then
carefully lower the plant into
place. The soil surface of the
ball should be level with the
existing grade. Add more soil
and firm into place. Soak the
root ball.
Newly planted shade trees
should be staked or otherwise
supported until they are firmly
.rooted.
