'Zurich Chamber of Commerce
(hears of work with retarded
A broader understanding of
the work carried out in this area
for Mentally Retarded was given
to members of the Zurich and
District Chamber of Commerce
at their dinner meeting last
Thursday night, by Mrs. Norma
Hemingway, of Thedford, an
active member of the South
Huron District Association for
the Mentally Retarded,
"There is no comparison with
mentally retarded and mentally
disturbed children, " Mrs,
Hemingway told the gathering, "
and up until a few years ago
there were no schools for the
retarded in this area - there
was no way of helping thele."
The speaker went on to exp-
lain how the association now
takes two-year olds into a
nursery and trains them from
young up.
"The biggest problem we
have right now is that the ret-
arded children are not being
given any recreational educat-
ion, " she continued, "It seems
there just aren't any men
around to assist in this endeav-
our."
Mrs. Hemingway concluded
her remarks by explaining how
a retarded workshop operates
and added that i.here are plans
under way for a larger area to
form into a workshop group.
The speaker was introduced
by Rev, A, C. Blackwell, vice-
president of the Association,
and thanked by Herb Turkheim.
In other business at the meet-
ing, plans were finalized for
a visit to the Dashwood indust-
ries Limited plant near Central-

to be included in the visit.
