New problem
on trees
(by R. C , A . Gilbert, Farm
Forester)
As if the floating $ and the
10310 surcharge on exports to the
U.S. are not enough, now the
Christmas Tree grower who ex-
ports to certain parts of the U.S,
has a new problem to contend
with.
Red. Scotch and Austrian pine
trees have been found to be a
hazard in spreading a cereal
leaf beetle. This pest has a
potential to create a consider-
able amount of damage to
grains and grasses if it were
allowed to spread to the prairies.
It's natural spread is tote east
which follows the direction of
the prevailing winds.
The beetle is now found in
the U. S , east of the Mississippi
except Vermont and Florida. It
is in Ontario south of the area
between Sault Ste. Marie and
Mattawa,
The U, S , proposes to reg-
ulate the shipment of these tree
species from cereal leaf beetles
regulated areas. Shipments of
trees to the Eastern U.S., except
Vermont and Florida, however,
will be exempt from treatment,
permit and certification require -
merits.
Treatment schedules have
been worked out which will be
used to certify Christmas Trees
going to U.S. markets west of
the Mississippi River. Trees to
be shipped to Western Canada
must also be treated.
Further information concern-
ing treatment schedules and
requirements can be obtained
from the Christmas Tree 'Grower:
Association of Ontario, the
Canadian Department of Agricul•
ture, or the Ontario Department
of Lands and Forests.

"It's the man about the wring, ma'am."
It's true, living in any older home without up-to-date wiring just doesn't hold
a candle to truly modern electrical living.
The changes that electrical modernization brings will brighten your life
throughout every room in your home — for years to come. You'll have more
outlets and switches where you want them, better performance from your
appliances — and you can even add the year-round comfort of electric
climate control.
And rewiring an older home needn't be complicated L.
or expensive. The cost will probably be less than you 0
imagine, and the Hydro Finance Plan makes it easy for `I4
.you to budget.
