Huron MP speaks on 'surcharge'
Robert McKinley, M.P. for
Huron, was guest speaker at the
September 2, meeting of Huron
Federation of Agriculture held
in Clinton High School. Sixty
persons attended.
Mr. McKinley spoke on
"Surcharge and How it will
effect farmers." Charts were
used in explanation of maximum
level of surcharge, tariff quotas.
Imports, which are duty free at
this time, are not liable for
surcharge.
He concluded by saying "A
very bad situation for agriculture;
our government will try to get
some concessions to Canada on
these particular tariffs."
The Huron Survey paper will
again be published this year,
under a pew name "Federation
Survey. "
Annual meeting was set for
Wednesday, November 17, at
Clinton Legion, beginning with
a turkey banquet at 12 noon.
The executive committee is in
charge of the speaker.
Two meeting announced, of
interest to all ISM members in
Huron, are on October 25,
Northwest and Northeast Huron
in Wingham; on October 28,
Centre and South Huron, in
Brucefield. Purpose of the meet-
ings - to choose four ISM direct-
ors for Huron.
OFA president
favours inquiry
on egg h dstry
OFA President Gordon Hill
said this week, "the proposed
inquiry into the Ontario egg
industry is perhaps the best way
.to eliminate the emotion gener-
ated in recent weeks and to clear
up confusion among egg prod-
ucers, "
He was referring to the recom-
mendation of the Farm Products
Marketing Board to the Minister
of Agriculture and Food, the
Hon. William A. Stewart, that
an inquiry into the Ontario egg
industry should be held,
The OFA President said, "the
inquiry must be thorough and
swift. It must be a judicial in-
quiry, so witnesses and records
can be supoenaed, and it must
cover all aspects of egg prod-
uction and marketinL,
