Man now for
tree windbreaks
Farmers should start planning
now, if they are considering
planting a tree windbreak next
spring. As well as adding to the
beauty of the farm, trees have
many additional benefits.
Harold Clapp, livestock spec-
ialist, Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food in Guelph,
says a windbreak can be bene-
ficial for the beef and dairy
producer.
For the feedlot operator, trees
will help to break the wind and
prevent a buildup of snow around
buildings. A windbreak will
also permit a farmer to let his
animals out daily during the
winter. When animals are conf-
ined for the entire season, breed-
ing problems can develop.
An added benefit, say horticul-
turists, is that trees can also
help prevent wind erosion or act
as a snow fence along roads. As
a temporary solution for this
winter, farmers should consider
snow fence. Besides providing
protection for this year, it will
show the farmer if he has plan-
ned his windbreak for the right
location. A poorly placed wind-
break could add to a snow or
wind problem.
By planning now, farmers can
prepare the soil, and order trees
in time for planting time next
spring, Further information on
windbreaks is available from
local offices of the Ontario Dep-
artment of Agriculture and Food.

The man who eats out freq-
uently, either because he is a
bachelor, or because business
takes him away from home,
can controlhis intake of foods
that increase the risk of heart
attacks.
A housewife can feed her
family fat -controlled, low
cholesterol meals by carefully
selecting her visible and pack-
aged foods at the supermarket.
The man in a restaurant or at
a banquet can be a label -read-
er of sorts, too. He can avoid
foods that call for gravy, or
scrape it from his portion. He
can remove the coating from
fried foods, trim the fat from
his meat, and use an oil -vineg-
ar dressing on his salad.
