Thomas Mc- Millan, who was defeated by J, J, Merner in 1917, will be the probable candidate for the corn- ing general election. The Zurich Juniors won the first of the four -game playoffs with Hensall last Friday evening. The game was very snappy, and the score was close, 9-8. Mr.• N. E, Dahns, who has been on vacation for the summer months, has resumed his duties as principal of the Dashwood Public School. Mr: Roy Weber, of Zurich, has rented the building in Hen- sall known as the Murdock block, and intends running an up-to- date harness shop there. Notice has been given that two hydro engineers will be in Exeter, Centralia and Crediton, in the near future, to give information on the distribution of hydro power. 40 Years Ago On Sunday last Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Schilbe; Mr. and Mrs. Harrington Finkbeiner; Miss Gertrude Schilbe and fiance, enjoyed a motor trip to Port Elgin, visiting with Rev. and Mrs. F.L. Howald at their cot- tage. Mr. Gerald Bedard, also Miss Meda Surerus, left for Toronto where they will resume their duties as school teachers. We congratulate Miss Katheryn Merner, who has attended High School at Elmira, in having passed all her subjects in her recent exams, and having won honors in several of them. She is now entitled to her First Class Certificate, and will attend Normal School as soon as she receives word from the Depart- ment. - Dr. P.J. A number of scholars who have passed Zurich Continuation School, are now attending the Exeter High School, there being six out of town going to Exeter. Sorry to report that Ivan Yungblut is nursing a sore hand with an infection of blood pois- oning. 25 Years Ago Four high school bus routes for the Exeter High School, have recently been awarded to the Guenther Transport. One bus goes to Hillsgreen, Kippen, and Hensall, while another goes to Zurich, with the third going to Dashwood and Grand Bend. The fourth route goes in a south- easterly direction out of Exeter. Laird Mickle, prominent Hen- sall business man, was taken to London Hospital last week, suffering facial and eye lacerat- ions, the result of an unusual ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS PAGE 13 (baseball accident. His son and two other boys were catching ,ball in the back yard, when one of the throws accidently hit Mr. Mickle in the face. He is the manager of the Hensall team, which recently won the Huron - Perth OBA Trophy, Rev. Reba Hern conducted the services in Blake and Goshen churches on Sunday after having two weeks vacation at her home in Sault Ste, Marie. Roger Venner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wes Venner, of Chiselhurst, had the misfortune of getting his hand caught in the circular saw, while buzzing wood at his home. 15 Years Ago Larry Bedard, Brian Geoffrey Warren Regier and Donald Bed- ard left for Brockville, where they will attend the R, C. Boy's High School. Mr. Arthur Gettus, of Toledo, Ohio, spent the weekend with his uncle and aunt; Mr. and Mrs. William Thiel. Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Mack and son Stephen of town, and Mr. Mack's mother, Mrs. W.D. Mack, of Crediton, have just returned from a vacation trip through Northern Ontario by way of North Bay, Hearst, and on to Port Arthur, visiting with Mr. and Mrs. George Leslie and ret- urning by way of Wisconsin, Minnesota and the state of Mich- igan. The trip involved 2, 200 miles. The monster Bean Ilsstival at Hensall, on Labour Day, was another big attraction and success as it is estimated around 4, 000 people attended. Owing to the nice weather many farmers who stiil•have crops out in the fields could not attend as they had other obligations to fulfill. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Prang and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan K albfleisch were recent visitors in Mildemere Michigan. 10 Years Ago David Noakes, of Hensall, student of South Huron District High School has received word that he has been awarded a student -aid bursary of $500. from the Department of Educat- ion. David is the sonof Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Noakes. Mr. Jim Hyde, Hensall has purchased the home of Mr. Lorne Hay, on Richmond Street, south. Monsignor Bourdeau, who has been transferred to London several years ago, has again been trans- ferred to St. Joseph Parish. Monsignor Bourdeau, who had made many repairs to the church and grounds of this Parish during his previous mission, is now enjoying the fruit of his labour. Mr. and Mrs. Don Hesse, Mr, and Mrs. Hubert Schilbe, and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Hess enjoyed a fishing trip in the Parry Sound district, over the holiday weekend. After a lengthy illness, Miss Dorothy Laureen Gascho passed away in South Huron Hospital, Exeter, on Monday, September 4, in her 42nd year. Miss Melvin Schade, of London was a weekend visitor with Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Schade. 0 VARNA The United Church Women will hold their September meet- ing on Thursday evening in the church. Mrs. Gordon Hill will give a talk on her recent trip overseas. Regular services will be res- umed in the United Church next Sunday, September 5, with Rev. Murdock Morrison in charge. Mr. Charles Pilgrim injured his hand in an accident at the local chopping mill. Mrs. Tom Consitt returned home last week after a stay in Victoria Hospital.
