Miss Mabel and Muriel Preeter
are attending the Toronto Exhib-
ition in that city, all this week.
Mr. Roy Weber who has been
successfully operating a shoe
business in the Merner block, has
severed his connections with that
building and business.
An interesting event tools place
on Saturday, August 24, when
Miss Celia Hess was united in
marriage to Rev. F. Howald,
in St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
Miss Mayme Lamont left Tues-
day morning for Sault Ste. Marie,
where she has accepted a teach-
ing position as a public school
teacher.
Mr. Alvin Surerus left this
week for Oakville, to resume
his duties as Professor of langu-
ages in an institute of learning
there.
Mr. W. L. Siebert has compl-
eted the new artistic verandah
that he has erected in front of
his dwelling house. It is some-
thing just a little new for Zurich.
40 Years Ago
Miss Olive O'Brien, who spent
a few week's holidays in Mich-
igan, has returned to her home
here.
Mrs. E. Bender and son Edwin
of Blyth, are spending a few days

'T eleventh annual Kalbfleisch
reunion this past Sunday at the
I Bayfield summer home of Dr.
and Mrs. Herbert Kalbfleisch.
A new funeral chapel is under
construction at the Westlake
funeral home in Zurich, Situated
directly north of the present
building, the addition will ac-
commodate about twice as many
people as the old chapel does

at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Garnet Jacobe, of the Parr Line.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kraft, Mrs.
Ed Datars, Sr., and Miss Anna
Datars motored to London on
Monday, to visit Mr. Datars in
the hospital.
Mrs. Len Haist of Detroit,
visited with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Oscar Klopp for the past
week.
Mr. Harold Klopp, of Detroit,
spent the weekend with his par-
ents here.
Mr. and Mrs. Orville Stein-
bach of London visited with rel-
atives in Zurich the past week-
end.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gascho
and son Joel, spent the past
weekend with Mrs. Gascho's
mother near Baden.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Schilbe,
are spending a week's vacation
visiting with relatives in Midland,
Michigan.

Approximately $2, 800 was
realized by the Zurich Lions
Club at their annual summer
frolic last Wednesday night.
Mr. and Mrs. .Tames Parkins
and Miss Betty Mousseau are
holidaying this week at Manitou-
lin Island.
Hairy Restemayer, of Dashwoo<
who has been seriously ill for the
past few weeks, passed away on
Wednesday in his 69th year.
The owner of the Dashwood
Planing Mills entertained about
35 people, consisting of thieir
families, to a dinner at Grand
Bend, last Thursday evening. A
presentation was made to the
employee who had been working
for the firm the longest time,
Stewart Wolfe.
Miss Ruby Church, formerly
of Zurich, has been promoted
to the position of head typist of
the surgical clinic at Westminst-
er Hospital, in London.
Relatives and friends gathered
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Lloyd O'Brien to honour their
second eldest daughter, Helen,
with a miscellaneous shower,
prior to her marriage.

Mr. William O'Brien, Mr. and
Mrs. Lloyd O'Brien returned
from Schwanaga, Parry Sound
district, where they enjoyed a
week at Deer Lodge. The former
was successful to pull out of the
lake a Northern Pike measuring
28 1/2 inches.
Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Hugill
and Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Thiel
and families were Sunday visitors
at London.
Mr. Walter Irwin, nephew of
Mr. and Mrs. Chester L. Smith
and Mr. and Mrs. Clayton O.
Smith, and whose family is vac-
ationing at one of the latter's
cottages at Lake Huron, has left
for London, England, and Germ-
any, where he will be interested
in the progress of the Canada
Metal Company of Canada.
Mr. and Mrs. William Merner
of London were Weekend guests
here with Mr. and Mrs. A. Mern-
er and Mrs. Emily Bedard.

A farewell ceremony was held
on Sunday for Brother Robert
Mittleholtz, prior to his depart-
ure for India this week, where
he will serve as a Jesuit Mission-
ary.
Over 100 people attended the
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Van Esb-
rook and their six children found
themselves homeless early Tues-
day morning as fire raced through
their 100 -year old home on No.
4 Highway, just south of Hensall.
Miss Diane Thiel was a week-
end visitor at the home of her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Thiel.
Rev. and Mrs. E. Heimrich,
of Ayton, spent a few days
recently at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Haberer. Tr.
Federation wants
empty cans to
be returned
Brewers across the province
have just started giving one
cent for each can returned.
Brewers Retail in Toronto report-
ed 22, 000 cans returned the first
week. Thats only 5% of the
50, 000 dozen or so cans sold
each week, but its a start.
"But the 'soft drink people'
don't seem to care" said Jack
Stafford, president of Huron
County Federation of Agriculture,'
if the brewing industry can offer
compensation for returned beer
bottles -and now beer cans, I
see no reason why the soft drink

manufacturers shouldn't too."
"The brewers give a two cent
rebate on returned bottles, he
continued" and the result? They
get 960/o of their bottles back."
Murray Gaunt M.P. P., who
twice introduced bills to ban
non -returnable bottles said "The
brewers have shown a little more
concern that the soft drink manu-
facturers, although the soft drink
people are beginning to move
now."
Ontario's new environmental
protection act gives the govern-
ment authority to ban the sale
of non -returnable bottles.
"And when the government
does that -- as it will - if the soft
drink people don't do it them-
selves, " Mr. Gaunt said, "The
people of Ontario can look for-
ward to a much cleaner environ-
ment.
