bean queen contest Friday
All girls in the area are invited
to participate in the "Bean Queen
Contest, " to be held in conjunc-
tion with this year's sixth annual
Bean Festival, A slightly differ-
ent program will be followed
this year, with a preliminary
contest scheduled for Friday night
at the annual Bean Festival dance
At this contest the three top girls
will be picked by a panel of
judges, and then on Saturday
night at seven o'clock the win-
ner. will be picked from the
three.
Contestants will appear in
ordinary street dress, and it is
not necessary to have a sponsor,
although some of the girls will
be sponsored by area businesses
or organizations.
All contestants are to be at
the Community Centre on Friday
night by ten o'clock, and report
to the east door of the arena.
Valuable cash prizes will be
awarded in the contest, and all
girls will receive a consolation
prize.
This year the winner of the
Bean Queen contest will have
the right to enter the "Miss
Western Ontario" contest at
Lucknow, on September 18.
The winner of this contest will
have the right to enter the "Miss
Many volunteers
at bean festival
People - the people of Zurich
and surrounding area volunteer
their time and labour to make
the Bean Festival such an out-
standing success.
After the primary planning
has been completed by the over-
all committee in charge, the
call goes out for volunteers for
the scores of jobs that must be
done on festival day. Between
200 and 300 local residents
are actively involved in the
festival on the big day. Their
services are used for cooking
beans, making cole slaw, but-
tering bread, making coffee,
slicing meat, waiting on tables
and the dozens of other jobs
which must be looked after.
Some of the men look after
selling tickets, arranging tours
to the bean fields, and supervise
the horseshoe tournament, as
only a few of the many tasks.
Others have to supervise parking
and of course there are those who
assist the ladies in the cooking
department.
Then there are the exhibitors
or those who set up stands on
the streets for the big day. All
these jobs require help --and
more help. But the people of
the community have been good
to rally to the cause and assist
wherever needed.

Another feature in connection
with the Bean Queen contest will
be the presence of the 1970 Mich-
igan Bean Queen, She is Miss
Beverly Clingenpeel, of Gratiot
County, Michigan, and was
crowned at the Michigan Bean
Festival last September in Fair -
grove. Last year's Bean Festival
Queen, Miss Dianne Zehr, was
a visitor to the Michigan Queen
contest, and this year's winner
in Zurich will again represent
the festival here, at the Michig-
an event.
Any girls wishing to enter the
contest must register in advance,
with either Jerry Rader or Herb
Turkheini, any time from now
until the event takes place.
Music for the Friday night
dance will be supplied by Ken
Mittleholtz and the Twylites.

Organize early
for festival
A Bean Festival general com-
mittee oversees the planning and
organization of the event and
the committee's task is be-
coming an almost year-round
activity, so much has the festival
grown in its five years of exist-
ence.
Backing up the general com-
mittee is a large group of vol-
unteers. There are sub -commit-
tees in charge of everything
from cooking beans to emergency
arrangements in the event of
adverse weather conditions. The
sub -committees report regularly
to the general committee on
progress through the year, and
as festival time nears the meet-
ings become more and more
frequent.
Chairman for this years' fest-
ival is Douglas Armstrong, with
Glen Thiel serving as co-chair-
man and secretary- treasurer is
Miss Carol Erb.
Gerald Gingerich and his wife,
are head of the most important
committee of the festival --food.
Other chairmen for the corn-
mittees are: concessions and mid-
way, Glenn Weido; tours, Orland
Reichert; traffic and parking,
Carl Thiel; hydro, Douglas Arms-
trong; property, Oscar Greb;
horseshoes, Jim Bedard; entert-
ainment, Mrs. Glen Thiel; tick-
ets, Wayne Horner and Cyril
Gingerich, and publicity, Herb

Huron branch of District 22 of
the OSSTF and a member of
,the teachers' salary negotiating
committee, said' Thursday the
committee "was pleased with
the tentative agreement." Mr.
Shaw is English department
head at South Huron District
High School in Exeter.
John Broadfoot, R, R,1, Bruce -
field, chairman of the board's
salary negotiating committee for
secondary schools, said he hoped
the agreement would be ratified
and school could open on sched-
ule, Tuesday, September 7.
A negotiator and executive
secretary of the OSSTF, Warren
Brown, Mississagua said there
are several minor issues the neg-
otiating committee must have
time to iron out and this will
take several days,. " We under-
stand what we agree on but we
have not had time to get it into
print, " he said.
Also hinging on the settlement
are wages and fringe benefits
in four elementary school teach-
ing categories.
Before schools open in Sept-
ember, four teaching positions
in county high schools will have
to be filled: a science teacher at
Winghani, commercial director
in Seaforth, drafting teacher at
Goderich and a science teacher
at Exeter. There is a possibility
too that some members of last
year's staff have taken other
positions since June.
Negotiations between the two
sides started in February. The
board was pink -listed by the
OSSTF on May 31 and the major-
ity of the county's teaching
staffs submitted resignations
which are effective August 31.
In late June, the board's two
Goderich trustees submitted
their resignations on issues arising
from the salary dispute. Mrs. J.
W, Wallace and Dr. A,13. Dearlie
charged the board was using the
county's educational system to
protest low prices for agricultural
produce and high taxation.
