Michigan youth
(continued from page 1)
Police said both youths were
warned of possible danger by an
adult on the beach just prior to
the cave-in.
OPP Constable Gary Shurgold
of the Grand Bend detachment
said one youth heeded the
warning and left the excavation.
Spears, however, remained
behind. The walls of the sand
hole collapsed without warning.
The companion, Gary Kimb-
erly, also of Farmington, began
digging immediately to free
Spears. He was joined by others
on the beach and members of the
Grand Bend fire department.
Police said the holes measured
two feet wide and between six
and eight feet deep. It was ass-
umed the holes were dug for
amusement.
The cave-in occurred at 2:43
p.m. When the body was recover•
ed shortly after 3 p.m. mouth-
to-mouth resuscitation was ap-
plied but without success.
Constable Shurgold said the
victim was identified at the
scene by two personal friends,
Kimberly and Martin Maw, of
Birmingham, Michigan.
