RC board buys land
(by Wilma Oke)
The purchase of approximately
one acre in St. Marys was re-
vealed at the regular meeting of
the Huron -Perth County Roman
Catholic Separate School Board
in Seaforth last Monday.
The land, consisting of five
lots at the northern end of Peel
and Church Streets, was bought
for $11, 000 from E, Brown be-
cause the present school area is
inadequate.
The announcement was made
by trustee Michael Connolly, of
R, R, 3, Kippen, on behalf of a
committee composed of Trustees
David Teahen, Stratford; Francis
Hicknell, R, R, 5, Seaforth; and
Mr. Connolly.
A tender for $730 by J. D,
Kelly Construction of Stratford
was accepted for the removal of
a house at 212 Queen Street,
Stratford, which is owned by the
board. The site is to be levelled
by the firm.
The board endorsed the recom-
mendation of Trustee Arthur Haid
of R. R, 4, Listowel, chairman
of the Transportation Committee,
that Gary O'Grady, R. R. 3, List-
owel be employed as a full-time
bus driver at St. Mary's School
at Hesson.
An information sheet on port-
able classrooms for 1971 was
distributed to the board members
defining the specifications and
comparing the four tenders re-
ceived,

Blood School in Exeter, while
Beaver Lumber will install port-
ables at Sacred Heart School in

sius School in Stratford (one).

John Vintar, Superintendent of
Education, reported on a news
release from the Ontario Depart-
ment of Education News and In-
formation Services which has
been distributed to the trustees.
The Superintendent pointed out
that Ontario's trainable retarded
children under the proposed new
legislation will have the opport-
unity to attend school full time
from ages 5 to 21, dependent
upon their capability to profit
from the school experience.
Under present legislation students
under ten years can only attend
half days and all students had to
leave at the age of 18 years.

At coffee break the other day
at our office, the topic got aroun'
to babysitting costs and the fact
that the federal government has
indicated that babysitting exp-
enses will be deductible next
year at income tax time.
That's quite a subject once you
get into it. The big question
seems to be whether or not it will
be necessary to name the baby-
sitter to whom you pay your
money or will every working
mother simply be able to claim
amount of dollars for babysitting
charges.
You see, most of the girls are
worried that once the babysitter
becomes known to the federal
government, she will be requir-
ed to pay income tax. In that
case, some other feel, more and
more babysitters will give up
their little sideline and babysit-
ters will become businesswomen
who will have less and less real
love for the children they care
for.
I even went so far as to tele-
phone the National Revenue -
Taxation department in a near-
by city. I asked the somewhat
brusque gentleman who answered
the telephone just what would
happen in that regard, and I was
told quite abruptly that his office
had had no information from
Ottawa on the matter.
"It still is not law, " the man
told me.
Well, that's the way things
work in Canada. The bait is
thrown out to the common
people and they are left to stew
over it and imagine all sorts of
horrible repercussions because of
it, and then a year or so later
the goverment issues a state-
ment about the thing which takes
all the sting out of it. It happens
every time, a kind of calculated
effort to get people squirming
and aware.
Quite frankly, I cannot imag-
ine a babysitter quitting her work
just because she has to pay a
little income tax at the end of
the year. That's like supposing
that people won't go to movies
just because a luxury tax is inc-
luded in the price of the ticket..
or conversely, it is akin to tell-
ing your employer you wish to
take less pay just because the
government is now collecting
a few cents a week less in in-
come tax.
I would also suspect that if a
babysitter was expected to pay
income tax on earnings, she
would be classified as the operat-
or of a small business and she
would be entitled to claim this,
that and the other things as exp-
enses which would eliminate
most of the tax anyhow. If baby-
sitting is really the non-profit

pastime it has been painted, then
surely the babysitter would have
little to fear in the way of in-
come tax payments.
There are working mothers,
of course, who believe that if
the babysitter must file income
tax returns because of the small
pittance she earns, she will then
increase her babysitting rates to
a level which would make it un-
economical for mothers to work
away from home.
That seems just a little silly
too. That's like a grocery store
owner adding a comfortable

margin onto his merchandise lust
because he has to pay income
tax at the end of the year and
forgetting that the more he earns,
the more he must pay!
If a babysitter threatens to
quit babysitting just because it
will cost her a few dollars at the
end of the year - just becuase
she is going to have to contribute
her rightful share to the federal
pot - then she is certainly not
the kind of a babysitter I would
engage for my children. As far
as I'm concerned, a babysitter
who is making a taxable income
should pay taxes the same as
anyone else if that's what the
government decrees - but let's
not get all up -tight about it now.
Even theincome tax people aren't
saying that's the way it will work,
