Towing a trailer of any sort
can increase the chances of a
one -car accident by nearly 400%.
Hal Wright, Farm Safety Spec-
ialist, Ontario Department of Ag-
riculture and Food, says these
odds can be reduced if proper
care is taken when a trailer is
used.
A strong, safe trailer hitch
with stabilizers bolted and weld-
ed onto a car or truck, and heavy
duty springs and shock absorbers
if the weight on the hitch is
more than 100 pounds, can el-
iminate much of the risk of
trailer towing.
Extra weight must be allowed
for and extra air should be added
to tires which will otherwise
become overheated and blow out.
Gears and motors should be used
to slow the car, especially when
'going downhill, as constant brake
applications will overheat brake
linings. By law, any trailer of
over 3, 000 pounds must be equip-
ped with a separate brake system.
Mr. Wright adds that extra -
long mirrors to provide a good
view to the rear on both sides
are essential, and electrical
systems should be checked thor-
oughly to ensure that all lights
are functioning correctly. More
time should be taken to pass or
slow down because of the extra
length of vehicle involved.
Finally, says Mr. Wright, stay
alert by taking frequent rest stops.
One stop every two hours is good
practice, and a change of drivers
is desirable.
