(CFPL-TV Photo) I South Huron Local Of N FU Assists In Protest Program Last Week in London On May 1, approximately 1500 farmers of seven locals, 317 South Huron, 352 Northwest Middlesex, 312 Northeast Middle- sex, 353 Southeast Middlesex, 354 Southeast Middlesed, 329 North Lambton, and 306 West Elgin; participated in a give- away program of many types of farm products, with the except- ion of milk, which Dr. A. D. Hutchinson, medical officer of health for London and Middlesex, threatened the farmers they dare not give unpasteurized milk away for human consumption. Randy Collins, vice-president of Local 31'7, and project co-ord- inator, and Paul Steckle, spokes- man and director, emphasized the plight is to educate the con- sumer to the fact that when prices go up, the farmers do not get any extra raise. Mr. Steckle and Mr. Collins siad, "we are not here to defy the law on the milk situation, if we were, we would have chall- enged it, but thats not our purp- ose, we wish solely to inform the consumer. John Mcllhargey, president of Local 312, NFU, said a few months ago farmers were dump- ing surplus milk, due to the pres- ent quota system, to sell it costs more for shipping than his actual income, and now does not even have a right to say they will give their own mill< away. In the three London locations the Trade Union and consumer's Association gaye tremendous sup- port to the farmers. Information leaflets and a quesi ionaire were given to each cons- umer. First prize was a hog won by Paul Robert, of London, and second prize was a chicken, drawn by Teddy Kremer, the winner being Keith Van Gut, Lucan. Despite the extremely poor weather there was a remarkable turnout, 0 Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity. They seem more afraid of life than death.
