County Councillors Increase Own Salaries
(by Shirley J. Keller)
Members of Huron County
Council voted themselves a
raise in pay for committee meet-
ings during their April session
and also granted the Warden of
the county $800 extra per annum
as well as an expense account.
Effective July 1 this year, coun•
cillors will receive $28.50 per
day for committee meetings, a
7 1/2 percent increase over their
present wage scale, $25 per day.
Provisions were also made for an
annual review of committee pay.
Also effective July 1, the
warden's honorarium will be
hiked from $1200 to $2000. 1-]e
will also receive an expense
account for "legitimate public
relations expenses" paid out on
behalf of the county.
It was agreed however, that
the warden's victory party in
January will remain the incoming
warden's own responsibility. •
"lie is the victor, that night
he is the victim, " quipped clerk
John Berry.
Reeve Elgin Thompson of
Tuckersmith urged council not to
approve the raise for county
councillors at this time.
"This is not a good time to go
for a raise in pay, " advised
Thompson. "It should be consid-
ered a privilege to serve on
county council. The federal
govermnent didn't set a good
example and I don't think we'd
be setting a good example either,
Reeve Paul Carroll, Goderich,
said that while he considers it a
real privilege to represent God-
erich and work for the people of
Iluron he does not believe he
should "pay an economic penalty
for this privilege."
On a recorded vote, 26 counc-
illors voted for their raise and onl•
11 were opposed. Those in favor
were Warden Jack Alexander,
George Baillie, John Baker,
Allan Campbell, Paul Carroll(2)
Frank Cook, Cecil Desjardine,
Joe Dietrich, Bill Elston, Lloyd
Ferguson, Eugene Frayne, Gerry
Ginn, David Gower (2) Elsner
Hayter, Lloyd 1lendrick, Gordon
Hess, Joe Hoffman, Harold Lobb,
D. R. MacGregor, Alex McGreg-
or, Everett Mcllwain, Ed Oddlief-
son, Roy Pattison, Girvin Reed,
Charles Thomas and. Harold Wild,
Those opposed were; Derry
Boyle, Wilmer Cuthill, John
Flannery, Ilugh Flynn, Robert
Lyons, J, L. McCutcheon, Anson
McKinley, Ken McMicl>ael,
Doug McNeil, Harold Robinson
and Elgin Thompson,
Reeve Derry Boyle, Exeter,
and reeve Elgin Thompson then
entered a motion that county
councillors pay for their own
meals while attending county
council sessions. That motion
was also defeated.
In the matter of the Warden's
salary, Gordon Hess, chairman of
the executive committee, noted
that five past wardens had been
contacted concerning their in-
come and expenses during their
year as Warden of Huron. It was
discovered that last year's
Warden, Roy Westcott, attending
Child Safety week
More children die each year
from accidental causes than
from ANY childhood disease.
The Dominion Automobile
Association is enthusiasticly
endorsing the Canada Safety
Council campaign to promote
child safety week which will run
from May 1 to May 7.
The aim of D.A.A. is to
educate the parent to the ever
present dangers facing
youngsters every day. In turn it
is the adults who must teach
their children the common sense
rules of accident prevention. If
the life of only one child is
spared as a result of this
campaign — the goal has been
obtained.
In 1969, the last year for
which statistics are available for,
1,804 child fatalities were
recorded. Over 40 per cent of
these were in traffic; followed
by drowning deaths at over 20
per cent of the total.
The Dominion Automobile
Association, urges you to teach,
by example, by instruction, the
children you come in contact
with, the common sense
everyday rules of safety. A
child's life could be saved.

FACTS ABOUT HONEY
Do you .know that:
* Canadians consume about 40
million pounds of honey per
year?
`i' Most of the dark honey is
used in the bakery trade, in
patent medicines and in
health shops?
* That the color and flavor of
honey is determined by the
type of flower from which the
bees gather the nectar, and
the darker the honey the
stronger the flavor?

Hess stated that the Warden's
net gain was not nearly as much
as he could have earned on wel-
fare.
Only three persons, Wilmer
Cuthill, Harold Robinson and
Elgin Thompson, voted against
the raise for the warden.
Approval was also given for
the meal allowance for county
delegates attending conventions
to be raised from $8 to $10 per
day. It was further stipulated
that gratuities should be an
allowable expense.
Consideration will also be
given to holding the inaugural
session of County Council on the
second Tuesday in January.
In other business, council
approved the budget as presented
by John Berry, clerk -treasurer;
and authorized a maximum of
$250 or 50 percent of the costs
for indigent funerals, whichever
is the lesser amount as a refund
to the local municipality, the
balance of the funeral expense
to be the responsibility of the
local municipality less the prov-
incial grant received in this con-
nection.
