Keller) Members of Huron County Council voted themselves a raise in pay for committee meet- ings during their April session and also granted the Warden of the county $800 extra per annum as well as an expense account. Effective July 1 this year, coun• cillors will receive $28.50 per day for committee meetings, a 7 1/2 percent increase over their present wage scale, $25 per day. Provisions were also made for an annual review of committee pay. Also effective July 1, the warden's honorarium will be hiked from $1200 to $2000. 1-]e will also receive an expense account for "legitimate public relations expenses" paid out on behalf of the county. It was agreed however, that the warden's victory party in January will remain the incoming warden's own responsibility. • "lie is the victor, that night he is the victim, " quipped clerk John Berry. Reeve Elgin Thompson of Tuckersmith urged council not to approve the raise for county councillors at this time. "This is not a good time to go for a raise in pay, " advised Thompson. "It should be consid- ered a privilege to serve on county council. The federal govermnent didn't set a good example and I don't think we'd be setting a good example either, Reeve Paul Carroll, Goderich, said that while he considers it a real privilege to represent God- erich and work for the people of Iluron he does not believe he should "pay an economic penalty for this privilege." On a recorded vote, 26 counc- illors voted for their raise and onl• 11 were opposed. Those in favor were Warden Jack Alexander, George Baillie, John Baker, Allan Campbell, Paul Carroll(2) Frank Cook, Cecil Desjardine, Joe Dietrich, Bill Elston, Lloyd Ferguson, Eugene Frayne, Gerry Ginn, David Gower (2) Elsner Hayter, Lloyd 1lendrick, Gordon Hess, Joe Hoffman, Harold Lobb, D. R. MacGregor, Alex McGreg- or, Everett Mcllwain, Ed Oddlief- son, Roy Pattison, Girvin Reed, Charles Thomas and. Harold Wild, Those opposed were; Derry Boyle, Wilmer Cuthill, John Flannery, Ilugh Flynn, Robert Lyons, J, L. McCutcheon, Anson McKinley, Ken McMicl>ael, Doug McNeil, Harold Robinson and Elgin Thompson, Reeve Derry Boyle, Exeter, and reeve Elgin Thompson then entered a motion that county councillors pay for their own meals while attending county council sessions. That motion was also defeated. In the matter of the Warden's salary, Gordon Hess, chairman of the executive committee, noted that five past wardens had been contacted concerning their in- come and expenses during their year as Warden of Huron. It was discovered that last year's Warden, Roy Westcott, attending Child Safety week More children die each year from accidental causes than from ANY childhood disease. The Dominion Automobile Association is enthusiasticly endorsing the Canada Safety Council campaign to promote child safety week which will run from May 1 to May 7. The aim of D.A.A. is to educate the parent to the ever present dangers facing youngsters every day. In turn it is the adults who must teach their children the common sense rules of accident prevention. If the life of only one child is spared as a result of this campaign — the goal has been obtained. In 1969, the last year for which statistics are available for, 1,804 child fatalities were recorded. Over 40 per cent of these were in traffic; followed by drowning deaths at over 20 per cent of the total. The Dominion Automobile Association, urges you to teach, by example, by instruction, the children you come in contact with, the common sense everyday rules of safety. ONE 262- a <, a 0 295 meeting representing a total of 190 days consumed. Hess stated that the Warden's net gain was not nearly as much as he could have earned on wel- fare. Only three persons, Wilmer Cuthill, Harold Robinson and Elgin Thompson, voted against the raise for the warden. Approval was also given for the meal allowance for county delegates attending conventions to be raised from $8 to $10 per day. It was further stipulated that gratuities should be an allowable expense. Consideration will also be given to holding the inaugural session of County Council on the second Tuesday in January. In other business, council approved the budget as presented by John Berry, clerk -treasurer; and authorized a maximum of $250 or 50 percent of the costs for indigent funerals, whichever is the lesser amount as a refund to the local municipality, the balance of the funeral expense to be the responsibility of the local municipality less the prov- incial grant received in this con- nection.
