Colquhoun Limited, Clinton. 482-9747 New Cucumbers Now Availdbie A long, seedless, mild -flavor- ed cucumber that is never bitter is now available from Ontario greenhouses. Many consumers are riot familiar with this cucumber which is known as the long seed- less or English -style cucumber. This cucumber has a thin ed- ible skin that makes it possible to serve skin -on slices or wedges in salads or on a relish plate. Because of this thin skin, it does not keep as long as the reg- ular cucumber, but its storage life can be extended by protect- ing it with a covering of plastic film or storing in a plastic bag in the crisper, say food special- ists at the Ontario Food Council, Ontario Department of Agricult- ure and Food, This helps slow down the surface evaporation that causes the cucumber to soft- en. Of special interest is its need- lessness, a characteristic that can be obtained only when the cucumber is grown in a green- house and the blossoms mech- anically pollinated. If blos- soms are pollinated by bees the result is not a long seedless cuc- umber, but a seeded marrow - like vegetable.
