50 Years Ago
Mr. G. Holtzman has moved
his household effects into the
residence of Mrs. C. Wagner,
where he has rented a couple
of rooms.
Mr. C .S. Zehr, of Wellesley,
preached to the Blake Mennonite
Church on Sunday, then returned
to his home the following day.
Miss Louisa Rarig left for
Kitchener on Monday morning
where she will remain for a
length of time.
A large number from Zurich
and area attended the funeral
of the late Samuel Beaver, near
Exeter, last Sunday afternoon.
Mr. William Rarig left for
Milverton on Saturday where he
has accepted a position as a
blacksmith.
Mr. Philip Sipple, of Pigeon,
Michigan, spent a few days
visiting with friends and relatives
in this area last week.
40 Years Ago
The Mercantile Firm of J.
Gascho and Son, Zurich have
taken over the grocery and dry
goods stock of J.S. Bedard,
Drysdale.

Mr. Newell Geiger who spent
Easter at his home here, has
returned to Toronto to resume
his studies at the University.
Miss Catherine Merner who
is attending high school at Elm-
ira, is spending the holidays at
her home here.
The Misses Monica and Mad-
eline Ducharme of St. Joseph,
are spending their holidays with
their sister, Mrs. Noel Laporte.
Mr. Donald Manson, who
underwent a very serious operat-
ion in the hospital, at London,
has returned to his home, and
is well on the way to recovery.
25 Years Ago
Mr. Philip Fassold, of Dash-
wood, has disposed of his black-
smith business which he has
owned and operated for the past
42 years, to Ward Fritz of Zur-
ich. The old building is being
torn down and an up-to-date
gas station will be erected.
After carrying the Dashwood
mail for more than 44 years. Mr„
Henry Hoffman has retired, and
his place is now being taken by
Ross Guenther.
Mr, Albert Clausius has purch-
ased a frame dwelling house in
Crediton, and intends moving it
to Zurich in the very near future,
William F. Jennison has been
given the contract to haul grav-
el on the Township roads, at a
rate of 56 cents per yard for
hauling and 45¢ per yard for
crushing.
Public meetings are being
called in various sections of Hay
Township, for the purpose of
discussing the formation of a
Hay Township School Area.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Flaxbard
have moved their household
effects into the apartment above
Johnston and Kalbfleisch hard-
ware store, which has recently
been vacated by Mr. and Mrs.
Ross Johnston.

A special ceremony took
place in Varna United Church
Sunday last, when a polished
oak communion table, the gift
of the Women's Association to
the church, was dedicated in a
service conducted by the pastor.
A very pleasant evening was
spent at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Russell Hayter on March
24, celebrating the 80th anniv-
ersary of Mr. Henry Hayter's
birthday,
Mrs. C.L. Jinks who was a
patient in Victoria Hospital,
London, suffered with a fractur-
ed hip, was removed to South
Huron Hospital, Exeter, on
Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Beuhler
of Waterloo have moved their
household effects to Zurich and
will occupy their home which
they purchased from Mr. Ed
Haberer as soon as it is vacated
by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Scott,
who are moving to Alvinston.
Russell Webb, 54, who died
suddenly Friday March 30 from
a heart attack at his home,
concession 15, Stephen Township
had farmed there for 24 ears,
Dr. and Mrs, Bruce Eickmeier,,
of Hamilton, were weekend
visitors with the former's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eickmeier.
Dr. Eickmeier joined with his
partner Dr. Shearer and left here
en -route to Toledo Ohio where
they will take post graduate
studies at one of the hospitals
there.
10 Years Ago
One of the oldest residents of
Zurich, William Rader, passed
away on Tuesday, April 4, in
his 93rd year.
The council of the Township
of Hay at their regular monthly
meeting on Monday afternoon
decided to build a new bridge
on the Ortwein sideroad, bet-
ween concessions 13 and 14.
At a recent meeting of the
Huron County Weekly Newspap-
er Association, held in Clinton,
Don Southcott, of Exeter, was
elected president of the group
for the corning year. Herb Turk-
heim, vice-president and Wilma
Dinnin, secretary.
Ervin Eckstein, of Dashwood
has purchased Aaron Restemayerr
home, and the latter is building
a new home on the adjoining lot.,
Douglas Thiel has returned
to his home in Zurich after his
school term at Agricultural
College in Ridgetown.
LAC and Mrs. Myles Uttley,
and son, Brian, have returned
to their home in Ottawa, after
spending some time in Zurich
Medical costs being what they
are these days, no matter where
an ailment starts, the pain tends
to settle in the vicinity of the hip
pocket.
Wife to husband reluctant to
help small son with homework:
"Help him now when you can.
Next year he goes into fourth
grade."
