Huron Associations for Retarded Plan
Workshop To Serve Entire Area
(continued from page 1)
South Huron and District Associat
ions. The aim is to establish a
centrally located workshop spon-
sored by the three associations.
A budget of $6, 000 plus, per
year, has been planned, and neg-
otiations are in effect to obtain
a building for the first unit in
an area where it may be possible
to obtain dormitories as needed.
A joint board has been appoint-
ed consisting of six members,
two members from each of the
three local associations. If a
workshop is too small, Mr. Hud-
son said, it cannot accept large
contracts, but by having one
shop organized out of the three
groups it would be possible to
select contracts that are suitable
to the training program whereby
mind, hand and eye co-ordinat-
ion, body muscles, social adj-
ustments are all being trained
in the same program.
Where some fear that the work-
shops of retardates take away
jobs from people in normal in-
dustry, it has been demonstrated
that the monotonous semi -skilled
jobs done by the retardates act-
ually release a company to ex-
pand its production by opening
new departments which employ
persons whose time had been
taken up on the nuisance jobs.
With modern equipment it is
possible for retardates to be
trained for assembly line proced-
ures, and no industrial accidents
have been heard of in these
workshops. While many people
will accept the retardates in
word, it is found that getting
acceptance in fact is not always
so certain, but a great deal of
progress has been made in sport-
ing circles, churches, social
life of the community towards
recognizing the personhood of
the handicapped. Some bowling
teams have actually desired to
keep trainees in the game bec-
ause of their good scores; churche
have appreciated thein in their
choirs.
There are government grants
for each trainee in a workshop,
and it is hoped that help will
come from the County and
from the community work of
each of the local associations.
At the meeting, Mrs. Caffrey
Cann asked members to bring
"quarter" spoons to the next
meeting to prepare for packaging
seeds for "Flowers of Hope"
which go on sale on May 14 by
a blitz canvass in the southern
part of Huron County and adj-
oining communities.
Mrs. Gerald Godbolt presided
at the meeting. Mrs. Scott

School at Huron Park and Mrs.
A. Hemmingway, home -cons-
ultant, reported on the nursery
cit Grand Bend. The nursery is
supported by the local associat-
ion while the Huron Park school
was originally so supported, but
is now financed by the Depart-
ment of Education with the
association serving as an auxili-
ary and with the Youth Assoc-
iation Across Canada for Ment-
ally Retarded (YAACMR) prov-
iding entertainment by parties,
picnics, etc.
Mr. Hudson warned that trans-
portation is likely to be a costly
feature of the workshop, but
1
very essential, and so he wished
the Association good success in
the Flowers of Hope fund drive.

CARE THAT MONEY
CAN'T BUY...
YOU GET IT WITH
SHUR-GAIN SERVICE.
Good service is just a little more than carrying
out a job. It's the little extra care going into
the service that really counts.... the second
look at an order ... a re -check on a load, an
extra phone call to make sure something is
O.K.... things like that.
It doesn't mean we won't make mistakes. We
probably will. It does mean we feel badly
when a mistake is made and it also means
that care is taken that it won't happen again.
That's the kind of care we pledge to give you
and all our customers.
You get it with every order of Shur -Gain.
