Zurich Citizens News, 1971-03-25, Page 31PAGE SIXTEEN ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, APRIL 1,1971 Zurich Peewees Playing Mitchell In one of the roughest games played in Pee Wee hockey this year, Zurich downed Mitchell 5-4 in an overtime period to win the first game in the best of three finals for the zone champ- ionship. Mitchell took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Doug Hesey and Billy Meyers. Zurich narrowed the lead to 2-1 early in the second period on a goal by Fred Mommersteeg. Less than one minute later Mike Henny scored to again put Mit- chell ahead by two goals. Two goals by Fred Mommersteeg and Wayne Clarke before the second period ended, tied the game at 3-3. Zurich took a 4-3 lead early in the final period on a goal by Wayne Clarke. Before the period ended Mitchell's Pat Kelly tied the game and forced it into over- time. At the 5:13 mark of the overtim period Billy Hay set up Fred Mommersteeg on what proved to be the winning goal. There were 21 penalties called with Mitchell drawing 11 and Zur- ich 10. LOSE SECOND GAME In the second game in the best - of -three series to come up with a zone winner, Zurich was downed 8-1 by Mitchell, Tuesday. Zurich bantams Win Zone Championship (by Doug Turkheim) During the past week the Zur- ich Bantams won the Champion- ship Trophy for the zone in which they were playing this year. ZURICH 6 - S EAFORTH 1 Last Thursday night the Zur- ich Bantams won their third consecutive game to take the zone championship in three Grand Bend Lose To Ilderton (by Doug Turkheim) Last Friday night the Grand Bend Pee Wees were eliminated from further action in the play - downs for the All -Ontario title as they were downed 4-2 by Ilderton in the third game in the best of three series. Cameron Ilaist scored the op- ening goal of the g'anc when the first period was only a couple of minutes old. Before the first period ended Ilderton's Jim Clark scored two unassisted goals to give them a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. Mile Jackson tied the game for Grand Bend early in the sec- ond period. Grand Bend were un- able to hold Ilderton back as Mike Connely scored the go- ahead goal to give them a 3-2 lead at the end of two periods. The final goal carne midway through the final stanza as Jack Darrs scored an unassisted goal to give his team the 4-2 victory. ANOTHER TROPHY - The Zurich Bantams added another trophy to their large collection last week, when they won the zone championship, defeating Seaforth in two straight games. Shown with the Philips Trophy is Captain Gerald Weido, and alternate captains Bill Bedard and Derek O'Brien. To date the Bantams have not lost a single game in their league or in WOAA or OMHA. play. Bill Bedard and Pat Bed- ard each scored another goal to give Zurich a 3- 0 lead at the end of the first. The only scoring of the second period came at the 11:45 mark when Bill Webster scored his sec- ond goal to give Zurich a 4-0 lead at the end of two periods. Before the 5:00 minute mark of the final stanza Bill Webster and Harry Smits each scored one more goal to give them a 6-0 lead. The only Seaforth goal came at the 6:33 mark with Brian Lane being the marksman. ZURICII 14 - SEAFORTH 4 Last Tuesday night the Zurich Bantams won the second game of the playoffs with Seaforth as they trounced them 14-4. Zurich tools a 4-0 lead in the first period on single goals by Pat Bedard, Harry Smits, Derek O'Brien and Bill Webster. Zurich added five more goals to their total in the second per- iod with Pat Bedard scoring twice while singles went to Derek O'Brien, Brad Oke and Gerald Weido. Harry Smits gave Zurich a 10-0 lead before Seaforth finally found range for their first goal which was scored by Dave Mc - Lure. Pat Bedard then made it 11-1 before Barry Lane came back with three goals to make 11-4. Gerald Weido then rebound back with two goals and Harry Smits a single, to give Zurich their 14-4 victory. NOTE! The Zurich Bantams will resum play for the A11 -Ontario title against Oakwood in the next few weeks. Due to the ice being removed from the Zurich Arena, the Bantams final home game will be played this Saturday night with game time set at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is asked to support the Zurich Bantams as they battle for the A11 -Ontario title for the second consecutive year.
